For nearly 11 years, my missus and I live in Sheffield. 100 miles from the coast, and tucked up in the shelter of the penines. We both grew up on the north east coast and wanted to come back, then just over a year ago the opportunity presented itself and we came back.

Why? Nearly every night since we've been back its blown a gale. Just been out for a smoke. Opened the back door and nearly took off, and the rain was stinging my skin as it belted my face from all directions having been buffeted by wind strong enough to make next door's mature sycamore tree flap about as though it was made of feathers.

I think both the wife and I had forgotten that life on the coast often involves learning to walk while leaning 45 degrees into the wind and being prepared to suddenly lean 45 degrees the opposite way at no notice when the gusts decide to randomly change direction.

    Still, no regrets.:)

pmsl life on the coast is great, the wind can be quite a challenge right enough and devastating to the garden but the fresh sea air ,an unexpected brisk wind on a hot day, watching the waves crashing and the spindrift on a wild brute of a day is just the best :dbgrtmb:

I reckon that you moved up there so you could tell us soft southeasterners how windy and cold it is and make us feel better. Thanks :thumb:

We've got strong winds at the moment (you'd probably cal it a light breeze at 30 mph :heehee:) and I'm quite worried about the gazebo we put up ready for the weekend.

Here in Sunderland we don't have to lean into the wind. We have 'lazy' winds - they don't bother to round a body, just go right through it! :loll:

My friend moved up from Rutland to Stock-on-tees [his O/H wanted to move closer to the Grandkids] and has "noticed" the difference in the winds!!! He's had to put extra strong fencing around the garden to cope with the strong winds. I think he wants to move back to Rutland:what::heehee:

The back of my house faces north west and the sea is 200 yards beyond that. It's totally calm here at the moment but we're being promised a force nine tonight/tomorrow morning.

My new garden fence is going to get it's first test, which is alternate planking either side of the posts to let the wind through. We gave up replacing fence panels which ballooned and split it the wind.

We moved from a village where we lived for 21 years because we could no longer stand the noise from the dual carriage way half a mile away and the helicopters buzzing overhead from the nearby airfield to a village on a hill:what:
We got rid of the noise problem but have a wind problem instead which is ideal for getting the washing dry but has been known to strip the leaves from plants so we have had to build hedge wind breaks to slow it down a bit :D

Wouldn't go back to living near that road though. We have often fancied livng on the coast but I bet the winters can be horrendous weatherwise as we only ever see the good side of the coastal waters when we are there on holiday and the sea is usually calmer:heehee:

We have had quiet strong winds yesterday and it is still going well this morning:cry3:
