Not been able to do anything much in the garden since the weather turned really nasty. Been in the tunnel most days just to see how things are going in there, but all the things I want to be getting on with can't be done as the ground is rock hard.

I don't mind working in the cold or the rain. When you ride a bike as I do you get used to it and soon learn how to stay warm and dry. Been a long time since it has been this cold for this long.

So now I am really getting to miss being in my garden. Been doing a lot of leatherwork while I can't get outside. I look out of the window and can't help thinking, "I should be out there doing??????". This gardening bug really gets under your skin doesn't it?

Anybody else missing the garden? What are you doing instead?

    Chopper.

I've got things growing under my Grow Light, and I now have the joys of doing battle with white fly ... just like normal gardening in fact!

I am longing to complete my garden revamp ,but weather stopped play . Fortunatly I do have my greenhouse which usually allows me to do something in cold weather, but even that is struggling with this weather .. Like most I am forced to do DIY around the house ..It is a little milder today fingered crossed

Like Kristen - I have been growing things under lights, and its great fun in the winter. I have recently sown 24 small pots of seed - things that could benefit from an early start or just something unusual. Currently I am growing some Brugmansia, Datura, Canna, Iochroma, Bomarea, Hedychium and Fuchsia boliviana. etc.

Each morning I come down and look inside the box to see what new seeds have germinated since the day before - its just like Christmas morning, every morning. Then in the afternoon I usually can't resist in seeing if anything new has been born since that morning. :D

I have also got some cuttings on the go, and the box is like an Intensive Care ward for sick plants. So I have a couple of Isoplexus that I grew from seed earlier in the year. They were outside all summer but just not making any headway. So they are now in Intensive Care and really doing well.

Ispoplexis sceptrum. This is how I hope they will turn out.

I totally agree too Chopper.... I fiddle around in the greanhouses, but am itching to be doing something more worthwhile......
How about showing s some of your leather work while we are waiting for the weather to improve instead..
People never cease to amaze me with leatherworking skills... What sort of work do you do, just pouches & bags etc, or do you tool the leather as well with designs..????
    Love to see... :gnthb:

It is a bit frustrating not being able to do anything on the garden. The worse thing for me is all the veg waiting to be picked, the grounds too frozen to attempt pulling any root veg so we are having to buy them from the supermarket instead.

I know what thats like John, we have a thaw here now so im going to lob a big pile of carpet over the parsnips & a load of leaves over the spuds & artichokes, so we can get them out for Christmas.

Hi Chopper. yes doing tasks in the open garden this year have been non existent at this time of year with the crazy weather we have been having. as regards to your riding a bike, i have been a keen cyclist for years and i have not been riding the bike for the past two weeks and i am now getting withdrawal symptoms. i have been actually reduced to using my wifes Nordic Skier's Machine .if you look out the window you may see me passing your window (GIVE ME A WAVE) . music:cool:

"It is a bit frustrating not being able to do anything on the garden"

You need some growing lights in that extension - which you built for the purpose (although Mrs JWK - and possibly even yourself?!!) may not have known it at the time ...

"the grounds too frozen to attempt pulling any root veg"

Blimey, that's pretty serious :) Can't rememebr a time where the ground was too hard to lift a Parsnip

The nursery where I worked in Japan grew Strawberries by tissue culture (blinking good they were too ...) but come the Winter we had perma-frost - I used to put the butter in the fridge in my bedsit 'cos it was easier to spread in the morning than if I left it out in the room!

Anyways, we had a rush order for some strawberry plants, so we were told to go out and "harvest" some plants using pickaxes, and the plants were then laid out in the office overnight with the heaters on full blast to thaw them out ... gawd knows if they ever survived or not!

I do lots of garden design plans, trawling through reference books and making drawings of possible scenarios with lists of plants to be incorporated -well it keeps me amused through the darkest days.
