    Lettuce & cucumber soup?

E.Coli wasn't the sort of infection I associated with fruit & veg until a few years ago when reading about keeping livestock out of orchards prior to collecting apples from the ground for juicing, and even then deer can spread it. But how do (greenhouse grown?) cucumbers get infected?

People not washing their hands after using the loo. Think I mentioned the lack of toilets on the mushroom farm where I used to work.

I'm a bit shocked that vegs can carry e-coli, isn't the outbreak from vegetables grown in Spain? All the more reason to buy locally grown stuff.

Had severe gastro enteritis from a Melon when in Ibiza, lasted a week.

They inject the melons with ditchwater to make them weigh more.

We couldn't understand how we both got so sick till we found out about that. My Brother lived in Ibiza, so we knew all about not having ice unless we knew it was from bottled water etc.

I've just googled it, the practice is not just with melons imported from Africa, the Chinese farmers had a go at it too and caused a Typhoid outbreak:DOH:

Glad to be of help, wouldn't want anyone getting as sick as me and the Mrs did.

Even if you've grown stuff yourself its always worth a wash, only takes a stupid pidgeon to give you this,

The moral of the story is, dont buy overpriced organic veg.
    Probably contaminated from manure.

Thought one of mine had escaped!

Been breeding killer cucs for years without mishap. When I saw the title of this thread I thought one of mine had escaped.

This one's a juvenile and fairly harmless :loll:

Just ask any teenager what type of manure should used for growing veg, "fresh" or "well rotten" and you'll realise they'd be a potential disaster at an organic cucumber farm.

Watching the news this morning, there were reports of unemployment protests in Spain, then seperate reports showing mountains of cucumbers being thrown away and bans being imposed on Spanish veg.

Wonder what all this will do to the price of salad stuff?

Sheesh! All this fresh stuff and healthy eating malarky. There was a time when you just stuck some sort of powder in a bowl, poured boiling water over it and - hey presto! An instant, hygienic meal. But then we lost faith in science and had to go back to eating vegetables.

Yes, you just don't know what's lurking inside that 'fresh' veg:
