    Hello
I saw this beautiful plant outside a garden centre and am mesmerized by it's flowers :wub2:

I asked what it was and they told me Peony but didnt have any for sale, and have been looking on the internet since but have not been able to identify this variant as they all seem to have cluster flowers and not open like this one.

Do you know exactly what species is it?
It will die down in winter and reappear every year? (cant remember the name for this type of plants sorry)
Would they be happy in clay soil?
    Does is spread?
Is it too late if I planted it now?

    thanks :WINK1:

"Do you know exactly what species is it?"

      Possibly Paeonia mascula triternata

"It will die down in winter and reappear every year? (cant remember the name for this type of plants sorry) "

      Yes (Herbaceous perennial)

"Would they be happy in clay soil?"

      Yes

      "Does is spread?"

They take a while to bulk up. Once they have formed a decent clump you can dig them up and split them.

"Is it too late if I planted it now?"

It would be OK if you got a pot-grown plant, but personally I would plant it in the Autumn

Have a look at Kelways for Peonies ... but make sure you are sitting down and have a firm grasp of your wallet!

It's beautiful. I really like those open, single flowers, more than the packed, blowsy ones. I have a pink one flowering now and the blooms are so heavy they can't really stand up on their own. The white singles are also beautiful.

Just had a look at the Kelway's site. Sigh! Wouldn't it be fantastic, if space and money were no object, to have a garden area totally devoted to peonies. Wouldn't be much to look at from July to April, but what the heck. I think I need to marry a wealthy, landed person NOW!

If I buy seeds (if I can find them!) when can it be planted and would it give me flowers next spring?

        Send me a photo? :heehee:

I expect you can get seeds of open-pollinated varieties that will come true from see, but they will take 3 - 5 years before they flower (and if they hybridise, rather than coming true, then some/many? of those will be a dead loss :(

No free lunch I'm afraid! they are expensive because they are relatively slow to get to flowering size, and slow to bulk-up as well.
