That is terrible Jenny. Exploding fluorecent dye markers suddenly sprang to mind.

Can't sell stolen Chickens if you're covered in bright pink dye.

thanks for replies all, thing is cant afford cameras etc. dont want to sound icky like but we are retired and so on a fixed income and as the poultry are way down the back of our wilderness the wiring would be astronomical and as we dont own this property it has to be done by a qualified electrician we cant just take it over the trees or somesuch, so thats out of the question, we have thought about rape alarms but bought some, now find the batteries for them are yuk, we have thought about the blank cartridge thing, but will look at the dye thing.

on the little cockeral, what we have found now is that they opened the run and actually pulled it away from the house which we know and so let him out, so as we found his remains in the back of the wood, who knows. did they mangle him or did the fox get him, the point is they def, opened his run

What we are going to do is build actual houses with large fixed runs and locks on and electrify them with electric fencing, but this is a longish project, we have wood, wire etc, but its just question of doing it along with everything else, you think they are safe in arks.

We know its someone who comes in and prowls around as last year they took all our greengage plums from the trees in the field, there were pounds and pounds of them, the birds didnt eat them all, and last christmas when our cayuga ducks were stolen, they were taken bewtween 1.30 and 2.30 in the afternoon, as we got stuck in the snow and the girls came to meet us at 1.30 and we were back at 2.30 and they were gone and the tracks led all across the corner of the rugby field across the pony field and into the back of the garden. so we kn ow we are watched.

I am beginning to think this game of soldiers is not worth it, we literally spend every penny on the garden and land etc and seem to get nothing but problems with theft and wandering dogs, there have just been people walking dogs in the rugby field and of course came across the boundary into the garden, my OH yelled at them and the dog and apparently 'they cant keep an eye on their dogs all the time and they are bound to investigate the animals, ie poultry' what can you do with people like that. the ponies have been let out before now and we found them the other side of the road way in the back of some fields where they must have been put, if they had gone a little further they would have been on the bypass.
Apologies for going on but I feel really down and tired this morning, didnt get much sleep because of the wind.

All we want is peace to live and be left alone

That's a really awful story, Jenny. I'm so sorry. I'll have a mull over things and see if I can think of anything you can do which wouldn't be too complicated or expensive.

Jenny: just a thought. You can buy fake CCTV cameras very cheaply indeed. They look realistic and their presence might just be enough to make an intruder think twice. They run off batteries (they have flashing LEDs), so there is no wiring to install. I've just looked online and you can get a camera box for around £8.00. Amazon, along with many other online retailers, stocks them.

      Best wishes

Just pretend to go out one afternoon, but go round a corner or something and then wait with a baseball bat, and if someone goes onto your property, I think the police wouldn't mind too much as long as you didn't kill them!!

You could set up traps, though.. like pieces of wood lay across the area they must walk, with nails sticking up (remember where you put them) and of course where the animals don't go.. just try and get yourself to the scumbag's level and give them what they deserve!

        Hi jenny,

so sorry to hear of your problem, but if such it is, there is really no point working so much to have the thieves stealing everything.

Are you sure that it is actually a person taking the chicken? I am just wondering why they take one at a time as opposed to a few.

If rats or foxes attack the chickens there should be quite a pandemonium and feathers left everywhere.

How is the security in the henhouse? Are there holes where a rodent could come in? How does the thief get in?

What about having a baby monitor (one which you can run on batteries) every night placed inside the henhouse?

If you have a pretty good idea of who is stealing why don't you confront him and say that if it happens once more you will report him.

Other than that I don't see any other solution than you sleeping in the henhouse waiting to welcome the intruder. Good luck!!!
