    Hi,
I have been having some trouble with Brassica seedlings.

I have tried sowing them in various composts from John Innis seed compost to ordinary multipurpose organic peat free, but although the seedlings germinate they seem to die.

I have tried with and without vermiculite - no difference.

I have an electric propogator, and use this to germinate the seeds quite sucessfully.

What am I doing wrong please?

The last lot I tried were in Mole hill soil, and these are at the seedling stage when I would normally transplant, but I'm loath to do thhis in case they die again.

What size should they be to transplant, and what method should I use?

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear about that. Are your seedlings being kept on a window sill in direct sunlight ? They might have got too hot. Brassicas don't need high temperatures after they have germinated.

I usually pot them on when they've got true leaves, past the seed leaf stage.

    Hi,
    Thanks for replying,
No, but I do keep them in the greenhouse.
This last lot are outside in a cold frame at the moment...and OK albeit a bit leggy.

Maybe under or over watering? Have you got drainage in the pots? They don't like standing in water especially on cooler nights.

How many are you sowing in one go? I only sow a dozen seeds at most, you don't want them coming up like cress otherwise they are too weak.
