I seem to have more than my fair share of snails. I'm on chalky soil and apparently this always makes things worse as they like the lime for their shells. Mostly I have learned to grow things which the snails won't eat - there is a 'sticky' somewhere on the forum which lists lots of things the slugs and snails will leave alone - but I grow a few things every year which I know will be reduced to stumps overnight unless I do something. I won't use pellets so I've tried just about every wildlife safe alternative; many don't work - at least, not against tough, street-fighting Medway gangster snails which have been known to climb the walls of my house and shelter under the eaves.

This stuff, however, does. It doesn't harm the snails; it just prevents them from wandering over the surface. The only drawback is that it is quite expensive. But I'm usually just sprinkling a little around the odd potted plant, so one box goes a long way.

If you want to protect things in pots then a band of copper tape around the top of the pot works really well; it did for me anyway, kept the little blighters off my hostas, not a single hole :thumb:
