Can't see any posts about the new gardening programme on ITV last night so thought I'd start a thread. It was very interesting to compare the style of Alan T's new programme with Gardeners' World.

I felt the ITV programme was, probably deliberately, rather simplistic with Alan showing how to mark a curved bed out using a piece of warmed hosepipe. Not exactly rocket science. I also thought it was a shame that more plants shown were not identified as there were some good colour combinations.

In contrast, Monty, and Carol, were informative and enthusiastic and came across very naturally, as if they were really keen on explaining what they were doing. Whereas Alan, who I like a lot, was obviously working from a script and not really explaining anything new.

Maybe the programme will get better over its eight weeks. I do hope so, as there are not enough gardening programmes on TV.

    Chris

I prefer Monty over Al. He explains stuff in ways that I understand, and doesn't just assume we all know most stuff.

I like Al, but he does have a tendency to only give you half the info, and race off and just get on with a job on his own.

In corporate speak, Monty is a team player. He understands that there is know 'I' in 'team'. Alan on the other hand 'works well on his own initiative'. He'd make a good contractor. The kind of guy you can expect to get the job done, but isn't going to be there long enough to bother trying to integrate with the team.

      I prefer Monty.

Never really had an opinion on Alan.. his show seemed simpler, though.

I always liked Gardener's World when Alan was doing it, but I think Monty edges it for me :thumb:, missed the new programme of Alan's unfortunately......

At the end of the day though it's another gardening programme on tv regardless and that's got to be good

I think I'd hate to work on gardening programmes as viewers always have such strong feelings about them. They're also amazingly keen. No matter when you broadcast a gardening show - even if it's in the wee hours of the morning - it will generally get some sort of audience.

:) I think we are very lucky to have them both on TV at the moment, they both have so much to offer in their own inimitable way.
It must be difficult to be a brilliant presenter AND a brilliant gardener and I think they score on both.Totally different personalities, that's what I like about them,so we have the best of both worlds imho.

Being new to this I try to watch all that I can, I found the cutting thing usefull as flicking thro the channels last week I happened to flick past the QVC shopping channel,I never watched that rubbish before but it happend to be gardening things, so I gave it 15 mins of my day, they had I plant that I'd never seen but really did like the look of, so I wrote it down "black lace" part of the Elder family, then this week they showed it on the show and how to take cuttings, so very usefull to a bigginer like me:thumbsup:, I'm now looking in friends gardens in the hope I spot one, that said I thought the tying a ribon and taping the same ribon in a book to id plants for later collecting seed just silly, how many different coloured ribon does she have? ten shades of red that all fade in the sun, whats wrong with putting a label direct on the plant?

Alan's program was pretty superficial. But what I did like was seeing someone else's lovely garden. A program I liked was called "Best back gardens" that was on quite a while ago. Rather than the grand public gardens - they were gardens that you could identify with and aspire to.
