Bit of rotten luck there BH.

If you have to use the ankle ( R.I.C.E. is best but not always practical ) get yourself a decent strapping tape from the pharmacy and use the technique shown here. If you follow the instructions precisely you'll be able to walk comfortably without even noticing the ankle is sprained. [ I've got a diploma in sports injuries and have used the technique more times than I care to remember. ]

I was going to suggest that along with the crepe bandage - and though most effective, it's a tad difficult to do to oneself! :heehee:

Buy a big box of Epsom Salt ,disolve a handful in warm water and bathe your ankle.Definately helps take soreness away.

As you are Self Employed and know what the outcome is of not working
Why take the risk of NOT going to A & E
If it is just sprained nothing lost It COULD be broken, and all your delaying tactics are then making it worse

I feel the pain looking at your pix, and I would be suprised with all that swelling and bruising if it "is" just a sprain

      Please get it checked out
A sprain off work two weeks then discomfort for a while
A break off work six weeks then discomfort for a while
A break walked on and not found for four days off work nine weeks then discomfort for a long time

I agree with Jack. You should have it checked out at A & E.

Ten years ago I slipped on mud at the nursery I was working for. At A & E they thought it was just one bone broken, but no, after a scan I'd broken my leg just below the knee and shattered my ankle, which had to be pinned together. I was in plaster three months and nine months in total before I could walk without aid.

Damage done now, if left, will not repair properly, it's worth getting it checked, believe me. :)

Good advice there from Dr Jack. I was able to walk on my broken leg thinking it was just a sprain, if it wasn't for Mrs JWK nagging me I wouldn't have gone to A&E and that would have been much worse in the long run.

        Get it checked

I'll take myself off to the doctor on Monday, Doctor Jack. I think it's just (?) a sprain as I walked, well hobbled a bit, to the beach today and felt better for it. Thanks for your advice.

I am just concerned about you as you may be one of these people that has a high pain threshold, and do not realise how bad it really is
Or more likely like myself at our age just soldier on and fob it off

(I went to work whilst having a stroke, just put it down to a severe headache, must not let my employer down) :-)

It's surprising how high some peoples pain threshold is, my uncle was walking around for weeks with a gangrenous apendix doctor said it was the worst gangrene he'd ever seen in a living person:oops:

I took your advice Jack and got my daughter to drive me to A&E today. Mercifully, it was vertually empty, I had my initial consutltation within the first minutes and was x-rayed, had seen the nurse/practioner and was out in less than an hour.
Luckily there are no bones broken, just a nasty sprain and heavy bruising. I'm getting about okay on the level if I take it easy but as soon as I twist my foot . . . Ouch!

So, it's a few more days without gardening which gives me a chance to get on with the designs I have in hand. Now, where did I put my enthusiasm? Thanks for all your advice and concern.

I'm pleased it was 'only' a sprained ankle, at least your mind is at rest it's nothing serious. Now with all your spare time how about designing a spade for use with one leg :)

You do realize that you got the timing of this all wrong. Had you been hopping around a few weeks back you could have hired yourself out a Rain Dancer and made a fortune.
