I planted some sequoia seeds about 4 years ago. They were meant to have a disasterous germination rate but I ended up with 11 plants which was about half the packet! (please don't ask why I wanted a sequoia in the first place, just one of those mad moments )
I've now planted 2 in my garden and given one away, plus some have been destroyed by my overactive toddler, but I still have 3 or 4 left. They're growing in 2-pint plastic milk bottles and are approx. 1-1.5 ft tall. They do look rather sad because they're rootbound, but the 2 I planted out looked none the better while in their pots, and now they've perked up.

if anyone wants a disaster in their garden, I'd be happy to donate them. I'm in hertfordshire.

In spite of the giant appearance "sequoia" is a light wood, so they shouldn't be too heavy to carry...

And I thought i'd over done it when all of the Cardoons germinated.

Did the same with Rhubarb a few years back, ended up with 50 plants.

Wish I was closer Ziggy. We moved from our old house in such a rush that I had to leave a magnificent Cardoon behind. Wouldn't mind some rhubarb too!:dbgrtmb:

What a remarkably looking plant! (although I eat cardoons a few times and I cannot say that I like it much)

I have a giant Sequoia that I grew from seed.. A fantastic tree too.. They are also wonderful as they are a long-lived species because of its high resistance to damage and death by insects, disease, and fire. I have spent many wonderful hrs walking in the Sequoias in the State & I also have an 8yr old Redwood burl growing as well..
There are various things which help them I think, such as the thick fibrous bark & scale like leaves, I do know the tannin content of the heart wood is quite high, but they do not "ooze" sap like pine trees from the bark either.. I hope you enjoy yours & find homes for the others.. A truly great tree... :dbgrtmb:

:dbgrtmb: Oh my gosh I would have been heart broken to have left that Cardoon Chris.. :cry3:
