Hi. what is accepted as usual, for a germination percentage of seeds? I have grown, (for the 1st time), my own Petunia seeds, and have had about 40/50% germination rate. Is this about right? I am asking, because l bought them off eBay, and l am not sure if they were the real thing. I don't mean that they are NOT Petunias - they are, but if they were "proper" seeds LOL.:dbgrtmb:

    Hi Josie,

I'm not sure what you mean about 'proper' seeds . Does it mean they have good manners? :heehee:

Everyone has their favourite way of germinating seeds and it also varies from one plant to another. We usually expect to get 70-100% germination of most seeds but sometimes are sadly disappointed. Usually you will have too many seeds anyway so don't mind if it isn't a high percentage.

With veggies we expect, and usually get, at least 95% germination but with flowers it is probably a lower percentage.

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't get proper seeds through ebay.

My Petunia seeds didn't germinate. I've come to realize (apart from California poppy) anything which is like a dot, I have trouble growing lol

Hi Shiney, By "proper" seeds, l meant seeds that weren't old stock TEE HEE.:yahoo::happydance:I actually bought 2 packets of 500 seeds, just to be sure :DOH:So it's just as well only half of them have germinated, 'cos l was up to my ears in 'em.:heehee: I also bought some Trailing Petunia seeds for my hanging baskets, and some Godetia seeds for my planters - we have been very busy trying to get them in situ but still have some to plant out.:love30:

Hi Kyle, did you use a heated propagator? 'Cos that's really bad luck - not having ANYTHING to show for your efforts.:cry3:I think that it was February time when l sowed mine, and l must admit, at one point, l was up to my gunnels (sp) in the things. I probably could have had a better success rate, but when it came to pricking out time, to say l got fed up, would be a massive understatement. LOL :loll:

Nope! I've never used any heat for my seeds. I think I drowned them because for ages I was watering them from above.. rookie mistake!

But I've still got stuff I grew from seed (Cosmos, Wallflower, etc) and no spaces to put them! So pretty lucky, really :) trial and error & all that jazz!
