Planters

Hi. I havent used a Forum before so any help would be appreciated. I have 2 Planters roughly
1.8m x 1.2m. They are filled with Rolawn Top Soil. They are at the front of the house and make up a terrace. There is a lot of Sun in the afternoon. I was wondering what combination of ever green shrubs i can use to look colourfull all year round and relatively easy to look after. The Soil is for Vegetables as my wife wanted to grow vegetables but has now changed her mind oh Dear. The Planters are about 13" Deep and have a Dampproof Membrane at the bottom of them. I am a totall novice to gardening ( as you can probubaly Tell ). Also where would be the best place to get the Plants ( Is it best to buy on line to get a good deal ). The Ideal solution would be for me to add a few Pretty flowers to the beds in the summer to make them look nice as they are at the front of the house.

 

Wow , the world is your oyster ! I think if it was me I'd dig a few bags of compost into that top soil before I started . I guess u don't want anything too tall if they r intended for terracing . That soil isn't that deep . some juniper is low growing , relatively trouble free and if u r adventurous , the berries can be used in cooking . Juniperus squamata ' Blue carpet' has ,as the name suggests , pale blue foliage , juniperus x media 'carbery gold' is bright yellow green . Lithodora is a sweet low growing shrub (?) that has brilliant blue star shaped flowers - there seems to be a blue thing going on ... maybe interspersed with some blue or white upright annual lobelia in the summer ? !!
I'm not sure how tall your raised beds r but continuing the blue theme , there r trailing rosemaries - can't remember the name , 'something falls' , would look lovely around the edge : )
There r some mad bargains to be had on line but if u r a rank beginner a good nursery where u can see what it is that u r going to get and how big it is....and more ideas and good advise . - I do specify nursery rather than garden centre mind . Nurseries tend to have a better knoweledge base . Have fun bun : )xxx

 

I cant increase the height as it is a raised bed with concrete underneath it i cant come up any higher.
