Preparing Ground Beneath Old Conifers

I've just removed two old, wind-damaged conifers and I'm left with two gaps. The ground beneath where the conifers stood is hard and lifeless and I'm not sure of what preparation it will need before I can grow something there to fill the gaps. Any advice appreciated.

The conifer leaves contain a growth inhibitor that keeps anything that isn't them away. Also would make it a bit acidic.

You'd be best off removing the soil & replacing it with something a bit sweeter.

 

Good evening Alekhine and welcome to the site. Assuming the stumps/rootballs are still in place the only thing you can do is either, remove as much soil as possible and replace with fresh OR. Clear away any needles and dig in, where possible, as much humus as you can get your hands on. If possible, remove the stumps.

At least yours is out now i have one on the edge of our the council will not let me remove and its 60' high the needles get everywhere,the way i cope is plenty of lime a couple of times a year and dumping used compost around to revitalise the soil, i grow spuds within 6' now and got 5lb of each plant and they seem to help brake the soil up aswell.
