    Hi everyone,

I want to widen my borders, what's the best way to go about this task? Do I lay a hosepipe down or similar and use that as a guideline? I can remember something like that but not 100% sure. This job I has been on the cards for ages so I must get on with it..

    Hi Stingo
I use sand as a guide line, it gives you a better visual on what your about to do, plus if you need to make changes it's just a quick sweep with a brush and re-line.

If it`s a curved effect you want, then either the hose or sand is the correct way. If it`s a straight edge then, obviously, use a garden line.:dbgrtmb:

In the past I always used a hosepipe. After many years of experience I now just do it by eye.

For a curve I do it by eye now, if it looks right it is right :)

I stick short canes in to give me a rough idea and also start by only taking a bit off if you're cutting into grass as you can always take more off! :) I use a bread knife to cut the turf which always works very well. :)

Mine gets wider everytime I 'do' the edges. Soon there will be no lawn left, though I have to say calling our patch of green a lawn is bestowing undeserved title upon it, so i'll rephrase that, soon there wil be no daises left!!

I judge by eye too, and, like you Chopper mine's much less than when i first moved here, i'd say the front garden's probably 70% less lawn now !
