I have a spot in the garden that I think needs a rose of some sort. Now, as I know little about individual varieties, I need some assistance, but before giving recommendations, the location has the following -

North facing, but protected from any winds and gets good sunshine from midday on in summer.
Good soil (for some reason, this part of the garden is free draining and superb soil, probably due to the chicken run being located there once).

It could be a climbing rose, as there is a perfect chainlink fence for it to be attached to, but whatever the choice, I would like it to be scented as it's close to the patio.

Colour, is unimportant - anything considered. I mention climbing as there is not enough space for it to get very bushy, so either an upright growth or climing would be preferred.

    Any ideas?

Following on from this, I've been searching on Crocus and come up with a couple that might suit.

Etoile de Hollande and Alchemist. The former sounds good as it repeats. What you think?

    :) Hi there ...

I have a Sunseeker rose (bought from B&Q), which is classified as a Patio Rose .... and was when I bought it perhaps in 2001. I then brought it here and planted it in the ground several years later and it has grown to more than 2 metres.

It is highly scented and doesn't take up much space and has maintained its small leaves and has the most incredible irridescent flowers ...

I massacred it this year and it is looking fantastic at the moment.

Worth investigating but I'm sure others, in particular our dear Woo, will come up with others.

PS Excuse the LoL .. pics were over a year ago.

PPS ... Aaron ... forgot to say that my roses are all North facing with the large brick shed behind shielding them from the Southern sun and then the Baffa except in the heat of the summer when it's overhead but their roots are forever in shade ... but then they are having a rest here anyway. :hehe:

    Hi Sussexgardener,
Not too many roses will do well in a north facing aspect as they do like a fair bit of sunshine but one I have tried and tested is Zepherin Drouhin.
It will grow as a bush or climb a north facing wall.
It's pink, thornless and beautifully scented.
    A favourite of mine.
Google it and see what you think.

Just had a look - beautiful and fragrant. Even better, it's sold at Crocus (I have a 20% off voucher with them) and at my favourite nursery. Thanks Alice, it would be climbing up a chainlink fence that has a hedge on the other side.

Before I go internet shopping, anyone else got any recommendations (come on Woo!)?

It has!! Thanks Marley. Now I have too many to choose from!

I have a Mme Alfred Carriere, so not that one. I'm edging towards Maid of Kent or Ena Harkness.

:lollol: Sorry Aaron, didn't mean to make it harder... Well you have picked 2 nice ones to choose from there.. I think that Maid of kent might be a bit more of a vigorous grower than Ena Aaron, but both very strongly scented....

Well, the winner is Ena Harkness (so far!). I love Maid of Kent, but as I already have Mme Alfred Carriere I want a different colour and Ena is red, red, red!

So...a trip to Perryhill Nurseries this weekend is planned seeing as Crocus stock neither of the ones I want.

    Thanks for your help :)

    hi sussex gardener,
    the following climbers are good for a north facing aspect;

    masquerade , 6-12ft, climbing floribunda, pink,flowers june-oct,vigorous,

    paul's lemon pillar,6-12ft,pale yellow,flowers june-july,vigorous,

    and the popular zephirine drouhin,6-12ft,bourbon climber,bright carmine pink,flowers june-july,vigorous,

masquerade has the longer flowering period but without the scent of the others,
    hope this helps
