Unfortunately us humans are "wired up" as meat eaters whether or not we like it. We're also programmed as hunters and predators but now manage those instincts in a more civilised way by hiding them under a system of managing how we harvest our food, be it meat or plants. So what repulses people regarding the eating of meat?, is it the fact that we raise animal stock deliberately to kill and eat them?, or the way we raise them, treat them and slaughter them? Is it a more "aware" adult population acquiring a sense of conscience and guilt?? I do know that a trip down to the local abattoir would stop me from eating meat for life, but, if you'll pardon the pun, I haven't got the stomach for that.

I know a couple of guys known as the Dangerous Brothers whos jobs involve shovelling guts all day at the slaughterhouse.

When they sold me some Rothmans that were fakes and unsmokable, I didn't even think about complaining to them.

The only land animal I have eaten since 1984 was a Pheasant that I saw get run over a few years back, I was skint, the fish freezer was empty & I didn't want it to go to waste.

Didn't feel right though, been too long without.

how did your stomach cope with it? I've been told you lose the ability to digest meat after a number of years.

Think I would feel ill now.

We're programmed to be hunter-gatherers, which I suspect means a lot of vegetable matter and just a bit of meat now and then. The problem is that many of us don't think we are having a proper meal unless it is centred around meat. We're fighting biology in all kinds of ways. For example, I think we're strongly attracted to things which are high in fat and sugar because they were the most valuable commodities when food was hard to obtain, rather than just a supermarket shelf away,

Being infernally nosy, I always have a look in other people's trolleys when I get to the Sainsburys checkout. The lady in front of me last week had her trolley piled high with cream cakes, sugary treats and burgers. Balanced on top of her hoard was a six-pack of diet Coke. I suppose it's a start. :)

      It makes you wonder.

I heard on the radio this week that the fat bit only affects us lot that were hunter gatherers during the ice age and that people in the tropics don't have the same cravings.

It makes sense, Ziggy. You'd certainly want your chips and fried Mars bar if you were facing an ice age. :heehee:

It makes sense, it's like why orientals/asians can't drink like europeans. We made our water drinkable by brewing beer, they made tea. We've evolved more able to handle alcohol (in small amounts)

I struggle because no matter how many pro-biotics I take I simply can't digest raw fruit. Lots of fresh things upset my stomach, but carbs and protien are no problem at all

To answer your original question. Yes, if I had to, but I would rather have it all done for me.

Mrs shiney is mainly vegetarian (a very occasional piece of chicken or fish) and I enjoy cooking and eating very varied and tasty (I would say that :heehee:) vegetarian meals - but I'm still a devout carnivore.

Re Quorn products:- they are not suitable for vegans as they contain egg white (even the Quorn mince) and some contain milk but this would still be classified as vegetarian. I use it very successfully in some dishes.
