I sowed some Sweet Peas in April, They now stand at 4 foot but show no signs of flowering.

Is there a problem or am I just being impatient?

They are fed weekly with Miracle-gro

Has anybody else experience problems with Blind Sweet Peas?

The seed came from a reliable source

    Regards

    Berniecole

Hi Berniecole. I had the same problem last year with sweet peas. they were standing about 6 foot, plenty of Greenery with a small amount of flowers..I also used Miracle-Grow to bring them on ,to no avail. I have put the problem down to the terrible weather we have had up here in Scotland,Rain,Rain And more Rain.it was Sweet Pea plants i planted into the garden so i doubt it has anything to do with your seeds..

This Year I planted Climbing roses for a change .

Somebody more expert may correct me, but I think the Miracle-Gro may be the culprit, encouraging leaves at the expense of flowers. I've never fed sweet peas as they are growing and have always had good shows of flowers.

I agree with Lorna, they are being overfed. To compensate, try feeding with tomato feed for a few weeks.

My sweet peas are standing at 5ft tall. Plenty of flower buds on them ready to pop open. I've never fed them.

My sweet peas have just opened, plenty of buds and flowers. I used miracle-grow all-purpose compost which does say feeds for up to 3 months, but with other pots I boost the feed when I make up the pot, I didnt with the sweet-peas just left it as the normal mix.

      Hi
I am having a similar problem - lots of strong growth, then flower buds form and fall off. Very disappointing. Is it feeding / watering / weather?
      I live in Scotland too.

      I live in Scotland.
My sweet peas have now reached 6ft plus. No feeding. Loads of flowers on them.
We have had a few stronger winds and they are now bent over :(

interesting thread .... from reading the responses,

Miracle Gro has an N-P-K rating (Nitrogen-Phosperous-Potassium) of 24-8-16 (plus trace elements)

Vitax Liquid tomato feed has an N-P-K rating of 4.5-4-5.9

another tomato fertlizer Chempac No 4 has an N-P-K rating of 15-15-30

so, from what I understand, N (Nitrogen) is needed for leaf growth, P is needed for root growth and K is needed for flower growth

so perhaps just a straight high dose of K (without the N or P) may be the better solution for a one-off application (assuming the sweetpeas have been 'overdosed' with Nitrogen?)

if so, then sulphate of potash, which has no N, and no P, but has a K value of 50 may do the trick?

but somehow, I feel this is not the case, as Miracle Gro is a general fertlizer that has all what is needed for the sweetpeas to flourish, and works wonders on tomatoes aswell (from what I have read) ...

Perhaps the sweetpeas are not getting enough sun, or perhaps your area has had a few colder (than normal) nights? ... The RHS has stated that this does effect sweatpeas

      but, I'm just guessing here
