Can't be ignorant about something you've never encountered before:thumbsup:

They're known as potato apples, and you won't be the only one on the forum who wants to eat them, its that time of year again.

They are just the seeds forming, if you cut one in half you'll see it looks very much like a tomato, they are very closely related, but are full of Solanine, which will make the world fall out of your bottom if eaten:(

Might as well get this next bit out of the way now, as the next question is usually "Can I grow Potatoes from the seeds?"

Yes you can, but they will not be the same as the parent, which is a clone, as they could have crossed with any number of potatoes in bee flight distance.

The resulting tubers will probably have mixed shape, size & colours, thats how new varieties are raised.

But this is the important bit, without lab tests you've no way of knowing the solanine content of the new variety, it could be toxic, even if the tuber is not green.

    Hope that helps:dbgrtmb:

      Thanks Ziggy

After that I think I'll resist the urge to sample one ;-)

You learn something new every day. Someone told me once (and I have no reason not to believe them) that you can get apples from crabs but I would never have dreamed you could get Potato apples!!

      :-)
