What do you use for labels?

I am about to show how new a gardener i am... made labels out of light cardboard, wrote in ink and thought nothing more... after a few waterings the cardboard is sodden, the ink washed out and there is some guesswork in what i have where and what is and isn't growing.

Put in cardboard with pencil and pen labeling, covered in cellotape as a temporary measure.

What labeling is recommended for the money conscious gardener?

Get the large white Ice Cream boxes (2 or 4litre), cut them into strips and write on them with a fine permanent marker or ball point pen.

I like the ordinary plain white plastic labels. The better ones have a slightly roughened surface on one side which I like as I use pencil. Pen markings tend to fade in the sun, whilst pencil doesn't.

I also use a lot of coloured labels, which you can buy on the internet. I am lazy, and if I do two batches of Lupins from seed, one red and one blue, I simply put a red label in each pot in one lot and a blue label in the other. I don't bother to write anything as the Lupin foliage is easily recognised and my labels tell me the rest.

For seedlings in the greenhouse to be planted out we use the white plant labels.

For plants permanently in the garden we are now using paddlestones with the names written on them in waterproof ink.

I use anything I can get my hands on really, usually though the plastic milk cartons get cut up, sand down one side and use a pencil.
