We have a lovely Ceanothus tree which I recently cut right back, so the top of the stump is about chest height.

Now it has sprouted all over the place and it is about the size now that we want to keep it at. My question is, what is the latest time I can trim it without spoiling next years flowering.

I'm sorry but I've long since forgotten which variety of Ceanothus we have.

I have an evergreen one which I have usually cut back soon after flowering in May. This gives it time to put on plenty of regrowth that will flower next year.

I think it's too late to give yours a major prune now(if it is also a May flowering one) but you would probably get away with a light trim as plenty of this year's wood would be left on.

The conventional wisdom that ceanothus won't sprout from old wood seems false as I massacred mine and it has bounced back!

You can still trim back abou 6/8 inches and possibly use the trimmings for cuttings. I was told never to chop right back the Ceanothus but clearly you have succeeded,
