I found this website today and thought it was most interesting. It has a lot of very good information on it both fact and folklore.

Hi Catz .. shall look through your link thoroughly tomorrow as I have just arrived home from a lovely evening out with friends.

I am a licorice (spelling always different) and mint freak ... but I will say this .. 90% of what is in your garden is poisonous .. many threads on here about this.

lol! I've been to the Alnwick Castle poison garden i work around the corner and it cost me £6.00 to get in and after all that it is here on the website! Worth a visit though if you are ever up this way, the gardens are beautiful and there are lots of guides to give you tours and information, but it is probably on this website. :dbgrtmb:

            Hi Catztail

Thank you for the interesting link.

I've stopped growing lilies because the pollen is very dangerous to cats. There have been cases of cats washing it off their fur and then dying. Apparently, though, as long as you pick out the stamens they're no problem.

I did that last year and immediately after cutting them off the flowers died !
Luckily i only tried it on 2 of the blooms, but i'll not do it again though.

I think if we responded to all of the poisonous plants in our gardens we'd have nothing left so i plant them regardless - nothing or no-one has turned their toes up yet and i've had Laburnums (etc.) galore with kids and pets running all around them.

There must be a way of doing it successfully, Louise, as I believe the stamens are removed from bridal flowers so that they don't stain the wedding dress!

I never worry about laburnum seeds etc because you have to ingest them to have a problem and it is fairly straightforward to tell kids not to go around eating the flowers. Lily pollen is more of a problem because it's something a cat can easily brush against and then ingest whilst washing.

I've been growing lilies and keeping cats for the last thirty one years and havn't had one case of poisoning in all that time.My cats would need a step ladder this year to reach the pollen of my lilies because they are nearly as tall as me :heehee:

Yes now that I am aware of this I will make sure mine are not placed where the cats will be able to accidentally get into them.
