Had this plant for 18 years and it hasn't done anything except for grow taller. Can anyone identify it please and advise me on how to maintain it?

Can anyone identify this plant I acquired 18 years ago as it has done nothing but just grow taller and thinner with hardly any greenery. I have been told it is some kind of yukka but I ain't so sure
Can anyone please advise me on how to maintain it as I'm beginning to feel quite sorry for it.
    Thank you

It looks like it might be a dracaena and it does look a bit sad. I would repot it and put it somewhere that has more light but not in direct sun.

I hope this causes no offence, but my reaction to the pic was to burst out laughing:)

Sorry, I have nothing helpful to say on this, I have no idea what it is, but it is novel.

No offence taken as it is a pathetic looking specimen.the reason it is in the corner and not by the window is we don't want the neighbours to see it LOL, but seriously if I chopped bits off and re potted them would that kill the poor soul? By the way erm.......how do I go about repotting it?
Many thanks and glad we could entertain you at this late hour :)

Just get a bit bigger pot, some multi purpose compost and some cheap gravel. Make sure there are holes in the pot, add some gravel to the bottom, about an inch worth, then some compost and the whole plant. Leave some space at the top of the pot for watering and don't bury the plant any deeper than it is now. Give it a good soak and let the excess drain. Never leave it sat in water it will kill it. As for cutting bits off no that probably won't work. The one way that may work is called air layering and I know nothing about how to do that. You could ask on here or Google it and I'm sure you can find help with that. Good luck with him!

Definitely the Kate Moss of the houseplant world. It looks like a dracaena to me. Does it get enough light?

                  Hi there,

If it took you 18 years to start feeling sorry for the plant by the time you finish feeling sorry it will touch the ceiling.

The plant is clearly telling you that doesn't like to live there! I don't think there is a point in growing some cuttings which would just end up looking the same.

Sorry but I would hate to have this ugly duckling in my home.
It clearly isn't turning into a swan!

Dump it and treat yourself to a beautiful interesting houseplant.
There are so many wonderful plants you could be growing, that would give you pleasure and grace your windows for all to enjoy.

Looks like a Dracaena to me. Not easy to tell from the pic and the condition of it.
It doesn't look happy. It needs to be in a better lit place with very little or no direct sunlight. If you move it to a suitable spot and it starts to look like it is growing a bit better you can cut it off more than half way down and it will start new growth from just below the cut. I wouldn't do that unless it really starts to look healthier. Put some slow release pellets on the compost and mix them just into the surface of the compost. If it has been in that compost for all the time you have had it i would repot it in the spring.
If the stem looks shrivelled and woody anywhere do not cut it there. You need to make the cut on a healthy part of the stem.
Personally i would do what Silver Surfer said and get a new one, just put it in a more suitable place.

Hi Cazzie, I have just laughed till I nearly cried! I'm sorry, don't know what your plant is...but have you honestly had this stem with a small crown of foliage for 18 years? I admire your staying power....can you get a close up of the top bit maybe?
