OH was issued with a Dell laptop for work a while back and it is not improving his mood one little bit. Most of the time he wants to throw the thing out of the window. Or rather, he wants to throw the **** thing out of the **** window. I fear I may have to wash his mouth out with soap if this continues much longer. Unfortunately his firm has a service contract with Dell, which appears to have an unusual Three For Two offer going on. It fixes two problems and lands you with three more new ones. The other evening, after another difficult day at work, I caught OH whimpering softly at the wretched thing: 'Please, please just die. Do it properly so they can't resuscitate you. Don't make me drop you accidentally on purpose again.'

Think that happens to the best of us - with me it usually involves DIY, and tools. Hence my wife has banned me from DIY incase I do myself a malady, or shock the neighbours/kids/anyone in the vicinity with my foul language :O

One of our dell pc's could be classed as an antique - it is a DX486 running at 25Mhz - not even pentium class, with 8Mb of RAM (yes 8Mb!!!), and a 110 Mb hard drive. It has no maths co-processor so takes ages to calculate 1+1. Your mobile phone will have more processing power than this mamoth block of grey tin, I can almost guarantee it. But it sits in a cupboard and acts as a firewall between our other machines and 'tinternet', it never moans, groans, or takes a break - the last time it was powered off, was when there was a powercut. It won't run any version of windows greater than 3.1, but Linux caters for this 'older' hardware and it has found a new lease of life, rather than a landfill site :D

One other good thing about Dell, is the quality of the components they use. Good quality components (resistors, capacitors etc) can make a big difference to the life of a system...

Me neither, I have two laptops both running Ubuntu/Linux v10.04 LTS. Glad to get away from those silly error messages and the need to have anti-virus software. Been using Ubuntu since 2006.
