Brussel leaves anyone?

    Having only joined the forum today, and explained in my newbie thread my wife and I only have about 6 year's gardening experience, please forgive me for what may turn out to be a stupid question!

    In spite of trying to follow every tip regarding growing cabbages, we have had very little success each year. Added to that, we neither of us have found cabbages to be overly strong in taste for our personal preference.

    However, bizarely, we have been fairly successful growing brussels, and (God knows what prompted us to try) found the leaves to be an excellent alternative to cabbage leaves, and they also freeze well! By not over-thinning each plant, we have also ended up with a reasonable crop of sprouts at the end of the year.

    Is this an unusual practice in the veggie-eating world?
    Any tips to ensure we get a bigger and better leaf crop in future?

    Welcome to GC!

    If cabbage is not a strong enough flavour for you, try Kale..similar to cabbage but stronger taste IMO...and real easy to grow.

    I've not tried brussels leaves myself or heard of anyone ellse doing it either.

    Many years ago when I used to have a greengrocery stall in an East End market the most popular of the green veggies were brussel tops - which is what I presume you are referring to as the leaves.

    They still sell them on some market stalls in the autumn and winter and I think they are one of the best green veggies. :dbgrtmb:

    I literally mean the leaves, not just the tops! We've tried kale, but figured the brussel was better to grow for the sprouts as the "2nd course"

    All the leaves are edible but are a bit tougher. :dbgrtmb:
