Some of my Pinks

I've been a fan of these for a long time now and have had various varieties. At the moment I just have a few of my favorites but here are some photos I've taken over the years.

For smell I have to say Mrs Sinkins is great especially if you have space for a large area (they attract the bees well too). There are some good sites for information on the internet, Allwoods is a very good supplier which I've used in the past - their website is great too.

Stunning flowers Sime. Particularly like the one fourth from bottom, it looks like it has glitter sprinkled on it.

 

When i was a "wee nipper" many years ago I remember the scent of cottage pinks mom used them as edging plants around all the borders amazing sight all summer and so easy to grow.I just wish i could get the same effect now I cant get them to spread aswell as mom did but keep trying.

I love them but unfortunately so does my Cat Moto for some reason so can't have them anywhere he can get to them. Don't know what it is but he loves a chomp on the leaves

Beautiful, Sime, and great to see young gardeners taking an interest in them. For years, they seemed to be grown mostly by grannies. I suspect the situation wasn't helped by names such as 'Gran's Favourite' and 'Doris'! As you say, there's little to beat 'Mrs Sinkins' for scent, even if her flowers can look a little bit ragged sometimes! I love the blue-green leaves as well as the gorgeous flowers.

 

Such beautful flowers, and your photos are great ! what a great camera you must have as they are all so clear. I am definatly going to grow some next year.

 

Thanks everyone, Doris is one that just keeps flowering all the time here, I've got one in a large pot and it must have a good 25 flowers on it at the moment. The photo of it above doesn't really show off the contrast between shades of pink.

I find the dwarf (not alpine) varieties seem to spread a little better , a good way of trying to coax them into it is to put a fertilizer tablet under the soil about 5 inches away - they soon seem to find it. I think if you keep them cut down so that they don't go woody and regularly deadhead they do thicken up a lot.

I had a good book from Allwoods (Welcome to Allwoods) which takes you through taking cuttings etc. - it's well worth a read if you get chance.

 

Hi Roslyn, it's a Lumix TZ6 - a very good camera for the money. I had a TZ5 before that. My friend has a TZ7 but I think the only difference is that it does HD videos so not really worth the extra money just for that.
