Only if you start and finish on the west facing side, and go anticlockwise if I remember the superstition right. Funnily enough though, its funny how many of the older churches have their west door bricked up just in case, round here at least.

I tried it once when I was about 9 year old, fully expecting to see the devil, or at least a witch, or even a scary old lady. I'd have been satisfied if anyone at all had turned up, but alas, the only result was that I was out of breath and felt a bit daft.

Having hopelesly hijacked Bilbo's thread i've cleaned up the original and copied this to the Muppet Show, so we can carry on without guilt:dbgrtmb:

Around the West Country, its the north porch door that is opened during funerals, so if the devil comes in the south door, he runs straight out the north.

I was concerned about St Brannocks Church in Braunton, as the North Porch was converted into toilets, hell of a shock for anyone using the bog during a funeral:OUCH:

        Unexplained happenings No. 1

When I was a kid, Dad used to come home to lunch & often my Mum would say she'd seen him walk past the kitchen window & tell me to go and unlock the back door.

I'd rush to the door & go outside to greet my Dad often only to find an empty alleyway:what: There was nowhere for anyone to go once they had walked past the window.

This happened to my Brother too, we just put it down to Mum being mad untill one day I was in the kitchen on my own when I saw someone walk past the window.

I went to the alley but there was no one there. It was only then that I realised that whatever had walked past the window would have been over 8 foot tall:shocked:

The house was built in an old brick pit, so the level was about 4 foot lower than the original ground level.

This always happened about 5 minutes before my Dad came home for lunch.

Maybe your dad had a pet ghost that he'd trained to go on ahead, so that your mam first saw the ghost, and put the kettle on. By the time your dad got there five minutes later, the kettle's boiled and his tea is waiting for him.

When we first moved to the island we rented an old stone cottage for a year or so. Not long after we moved in the back door bell rang, but on going to the door there was nobody there. This happened on a regular basis. We checked out the doorbell which was electric, nothing wrong with it.

We then decided to experiment by not answering the bell. It would be rung again a couple of minutes later and so on. Only when we opened the door did it stop.

A light, like a torch light used to appear on the ceiling above my daughters bunk bed, also unexplained.

We were told later a young girl of nine or ten lived there but had died. Was it her perhaps?

It's funny Ziggy, I'm still sceptical about the existence of ghosts, but here's another one I can't explain.

Driving home late one night on my own I was coming to the top of a hill with a fast straight ahead of me and a farm that sat either side of the road. Just as I was picking up speed, there were cars coming towards me and a sheep stepped off the kerb from the right hand side of the rode and ran across in front of me. The other cars didn't brake. I slammed on my brakes so as not to hit it and it totally disappeared into an old milestone on my left.

              Creepy!

That leads nicely into unexplained thing No. 2

A303, going towards London. Just past the Mere dual carriageway the road narrows & there is a steep hill with an overtaking lane.

I was nearly at the top when I saw some headlights in the wing mirror, I thought the car overtaking me wouldn't have enough road to get past before the overtaking lane ran out so I slowed down to let him in.

The headlights went from my wing mirror, but no car came past, and there was no car behind me:thud:

There were some mating in the neighbors back garden a couple years ago and the NOISE! If they'd been in mine I'd have had the hose on em just to run em off!! They can be boogers!

OMG Ziggy, I had the same experience but with a motorbike (or so I thought). This was on the road from Bournemouth to Southampton, flat road with no turn offs. The single light advanced from behind, then moved over to my right & I expected to see a bike come by. Nothing, no bike, no more light......it gave me such a fright I cried out & woke my b/f up. He knew by my reaction that something spooky had happened.
I'm like you Sheal....don't know what to believe.
Blimey, don't know if I should be reading this at bedtime:shocked:
