Burning decking with a gas blow torch ...

anyone tried this yet?

I have landed a large gardening job to do in 3 weeks time ... total revamp of the garden/lawn and owner has asked me to sort his decking

he has been painting the decking on a yearly basis with decking stain/paint ... he says it looks good for a while then deteriorates .... and costs him approx £50 per year on the paint/stain stuff (its a large decking and he is sorry he stained it, and feels he should have left it as installed)

recently saw a program on tv where they burn the decking with a gas blow torch, then brush it with a wire brush .... turns black and ends up being a japanese style

might be a permanent solution and save money in the long run? .... looks good aswell

 

I'd be extra careful as the stain/paint may be flammable and you could end up with no eyebrows.

 

I agree it looks really good, but you would have to be ever so careful when you work with the flame...

 

Dim - I would not try it on a new clients decking. Have a little practice first or it could end up a disaster.

They are using brand new planks , yours are old and painted & stainded, if you can do what Harry said, have a practice , it was the same with me when I done gardening as a side line that request's for other stuff apart from gardening !!!! no was my answer.

Examples :

Clean windows ( no I am a not a window cleaner )

Build wall (no I am not a bricklayer)

"we need a cleaner" is the best one I had as I was realy tidy in the garden !!!!

I cant see anything regarding burning your decking to improve it,

But I'm sure its a great idea.

thanks guys .... good points .... I have forwarded the video to the client and told him that if he wishes to take this route, he can do it, but I will assist

he can do the burning, I'll hold the gas canister and the hosepipe incase it catches alight .... he has said he will have a close look at it, and seems very interested .... could be a good idea.... suppose time will tell
