    Hi

Around this time last year i used a miricle gro product which was a mix of seed and top soil mix. It was fairly effective but this year i'm going to make up my own mix as its too expensive for large areas....just wondering what will work. Would a mix of lawn sand, regular compost and seed work ok or do i need anything more specialist?

    Thanks
    Mark

    Hello Mcmac
I make a mix of soil / compost / sharp sand then mix in the regular lawn seed , or shade lawn seed. I use this to patch the pee burn marks from our Cocker Maya :doggysmooze:. It seems to work fine 80% of the time , grass seed always has spots where it won't grow for some frustrating reason. If I have time I find pegging down a sheet of polythene over the spot for about 10 - 14 days works well.
The MG patch magic seems very expensive , how good is it ? I use the MG lawn fertiliser in the hose dispenser thingy , that works really well :dbgrtmb:

and on a slightly different topic, but related to this thread ...

be very carefull of topsoil .... have recently had an experience of topsoil (black in colour) ... was cheap, but flippin heck! .... weeds grew like crazy, and they were not weeds native to the area

so, it's best to sometimes buy a better grade topsoil .... will save you money in the long run as weedkillers are expensive

      Hi Mark
just one more thing - make sure your soil , compost and sand are as dry as you can get them. Otherwise you end up with a mud pie that sticks to everything ! I scrape about half an inch of soil off the dead patch and break up the surface before I put the mix on. Then water in well.
Now thats what I use on small repairs . If you have a few dead areas it may be better to buy a square meter of turf from B and Q for about £3 and patch in with that .
