The Isle of Portland get benefit by the presence of such a water mass as the Channel is.
As a consequence of that, its climate is pretty mild (on a general basis).
Furthermore, the British islands themselves are mild climate islands both because they are sorrounded by the sea (of course: they are islands...), and they are located in a geographical position affected by the Gulf Stream (as the whole Western Europe and Europe as a whole).
From +9 to +16, is a 7 degrees Temperature Range.
Probably even a pretty "great range" if we consider where the isle fo Portland is located.
Anyway if we consider any Temperature Graph related to a British place over the year, then we can see that it is a pretty "flat" Graph with low "peaks" (in Mathematics, they call them "maxima" and "minima" when they draw the graph of a function) and a slight slope of the tangent line to the graph.
As a consequence of that, also the "Variance" is a low value.
In Statistics, The "Variance" is a measure of how far a set of data (in this case, the various recorded temperatures) are spread out from each other and - of course - from the average value (in this case, the Annual Mean Temperature).
    Example:
If the Annual Mean Temperature of Portland is +15, then we may expect temperatures sometimes at +9, sometimes at +18, sometimes at +13, sometimes at +16, ecc.
Anyway, these expected values are not too far from the Average Temperature (+15).

We can now consider a Siberian city whose Annual Mean Temperature is +15 as well.
But in this case, we record sometimes temperatures at minus 30, sometimes at minus 15 (in winter), sometimes at +30, sometimes at +40 (in summer).
We can see that although both the places have the same Annual Mean Temperature, they have "not exactly" the same climate... :D
In the case of the siberian city, we say that the "Variance" is a high value.

If we want to look after gardening, is better a low "Variance"...
That's why - probably - Siberia is not the better place to grow a fine lawn...:D
That's why - probably - in England they are so good in looking after gardens (Climate help them !)

The wind is howling through the garden and the rain is hammering against my front windows, which it does when bad weather's coming from the North. It's 8,07pm and 52f outside despite the wind.

Today here we have had the archetypal 'four seasons in one day'.
Dawn was cold, clear and misty.
By mid morning the sun was shining and the day had a pleasantly warm feel.
Afternoon brought a gusty wind with leaves falling from the trees and swirling around, accompanied by grey clouds scudding across the sky.
As I write this the wind is picking up outside and the threat of rain is in the air.

Zero degrees (freezing point) hit early this morning around 5 AM in the nearby Milan Malpensa Airport.
Today, October 18th, the first freezing temperature of the winter season has been recorded.

Clear sky, dry air, wind calm.
