Natty - a good way to see what sort of soil you have is to look at what is growing in neighbour's gardens. If they have Rhodedendrons, Azaleas or Pieris you should be OK.

    Natty

I've used soil test kits a couple of times and found them to be well-nigh useless. They produced dull indistinct colours that look nothing like the sample colours on the test card.

    I do what Pete suggests.

    Hi Natty,
I too have found the kits to be very lacking.. The thing is it could quite easily be different PH in different areas of the garden.. I always go back to basics & my school days & so far it has never let me down.. You can easily check your soil to see if it is alkaline or acidic with baking soda and or vinegar. There are two ways to do this.. The way it was taught or my way... :hehe:

First you should get several samples of your soil from different places in your garden, since soil can be different in different locations. Place a mark of some kind on the soil so you know where you took the soil from.

After you have collected soil samples you can start to test the soil to see if it is acidic or alkaline. First pour a half cup of vinegar on the soil sample. If the soil makes a fizz or if tiny bubble appear then you have an alkaline soil.

To see if your soil is acidic take a half cup of baking soda and a half cup of water and mix it into the soil sample. If your soil starts to fizz or bubble then you have an acidic soil.

:hehe: Or of course you can always do it my way which is to take a container of vinegar and a container of half baking soda and half water and walk around the soiled area that you want to test. As you walk you can put some vinegar or baking soda water on the soil and see if it bubbles with vinegar or baking soda mixed with water.

This simple test will tell you what type of soil you have acidic or alkaline. If you want a more accurate test you should take a soil sample in to have it tested
