I am going to have my hair trimmed which I am told will cost £20, how much tip should I give her?

I don't know why it is a custom to tip haidressers as well as waiters.
But anyway, I would have it in proportion of what you pay, so maybe £2-3...?

The general rate is a minimum of 10% of the fee so therefore £2 but £1.50 or £2 if you are very satisfied with her work.

I give mine 2 quid but she only charges 11 and is a friend. She also comes to my house to do it.

Zero ... he/she is getting paid enough as it is these days .... it is a Profession not a Service! Do you tip your Masseur, Dentist, Doctor or Lawyer?

Edit: I must say that if I knew the person was working in a salon and not making much ... ie, the owner was getting all the 'takings' ... then I would probably give 10% to the person actually doing the work assuming it was a good job .. on the side!

I've never tipped a hairdresser or barber

however, whenever I go into a pub and buy a drink or round of drinks, I always tell the barman/barlady ... 'and one for you' ... they normally just put a few pounds in a glass with the other tips ... I only do this on the first order

in a restaurant, I always tip 10% minimum, even if the food was shite ... the waiter is not the chef

it's just a south african way, but have seen that here in the UK, people are a bit 'stingy' and tightfisted

in south africa and the USA, many restaurants do not pay the waiters a wage/salary ... they rely soley on tips and can (and often do) make a lot of money

I might be a bit stingy and tightfisted, but I always tip the barber.:WINK1:

As to the person serving up the drinks, unless they bring them to the table they are not providing a service, in my opinion, so no way.

ever wondered why .... when the pub is crowded and you stand at the barcounter (frantically trying to get the barlady's attention ... flailing your arms .... clicking your fingers .... but to no avail), then ... someone behind smiles, then gets served first and you are ignored?

no .... it's not because you are ugly .... it's because you are 'stingy'

Well, as I never have my hair cut (professionally, hubby trims the ends off), I really shouldn't be one to have said something ... :rolleyespink: ... but I always tip waiters/waitresses here as they are so low paid and rely on such. On the other hand, I understand the Portuguese never leave a tip.

I dont actually stand flailing my arms.
If its that bad I usually go elswhere.

How do they know you are going to tip them?
Do you carry a large sign?

Different countries have different approaches to tipping.

I've never needed to go elsewhere ... and like I said, I tip the barlady on the 1st round I buy ... when I go to order again on the same night, or the next night or a month later, she remembers

and, I know different countries have different approaches to tipping, but kindness and good manners are universal

try it sometime and you won't need to go elsewhere

Maybe you should follow your own advice and tip the barber, or are S. Africans "Stingy and tightfisted", only when not drinking.:D

Good manners and tipping are two very different things.

Jumping the queue by flashing the cash is surely not considered good manners:scratch:

I rarely tip my hairdresser, not because i don't want to, but i rarely have cash in my purse, i only carry my debit card, and rarely have time to go to the bank or find a cash machine, so if i do have change i will give them something. However, quite often i find the young apprentices do alot of the work for colouring and washing etc, but the hairdresser who spent a quarter of the time with me, makes sure she takes the money and gets the tip. Hmm!

Always leave a tip for the waitress/waiters etc.

            I give mine 10%.
I don't tip anyone else. Ever.
I agree with what was said before, these days people are paid well enough. My partner on the other hand tips all and sundry
