On the beach at Walberswick yesterday, my cousins' dog came bounding out of the sea with this dead fish hanging off its ear!
My knowledge of fish is sketchy to say the least, can someone tell me what it is?

Yep, Lesser Spotted Dogfish. A member of the shark family. No bones just Cartilage. The skin was used as sandpaper before B & Q was invented.

If you've eaten "Rock Salmon" from the Chip Shop then you'll know what it tastes like.

Chip shops didn't think people would buy "Dogfish"

It's quite a nice tasting fish, with a single main bone running down the length of it. I think it is also known a Bull Huss.?

I was close ha ha I had rock salmon once when I visited a little town near Cambridge, I remember it was rather nice (not that I'd have it again now I know it's a dog fish I ate). :)

Nothing wrong with eating a Dogfish Lily, its just a name.

The Bull Huss is the Greater Spotted Dogfish Armandii, they grow much bigger, but are simliar in taste and skeletal structure.

They have much more attitude though & put up a fight & then look cross at you if you catch one.

Yep, I've caught a few in my time, Ziggy, off the old Harbour at Hastings. The skin is made of bone, not scales, and is like sandpaper.:D

Back in the day my Grandad, who was from Hull, used to tell a tale of how the local women refused to buy Dogfish from the Fish Market, just because of the name.

He said the Fish Shops introduced a new fish from the Continent that was advertised as the new best seller.
It was called Wuff. People bought it and liked it.
