    Hello,

I live in the East Riding of Yorkshire and I have a large-ish garden which I created from scratch about 5 years ago. I live in the middle of the countryside. It has taken me about 4 years to get rid of the weeds, put paths in and start planting. The house in which we live had been empty for two years and so the garden was a mess. I have also been doing most of it as cheaply as I can as so it has taken time to save up for. I am about 85% sorted with the layout and structure so far, but not got many of those things called plants yet though.

I am trying to grow as much fruit and veg as I can and I am learning lots every year.

    High points so far :
Growing all the flowers for my planters and pots from seed last year (first time I had done this).

An OK harvest of vegetables over the past few years.

Changing an old brick built coal shed into a potting shed.

Not having any slugs or snails.

Moving lots of box hedging and not killing it off.

    Low points so far :
    Not enough time.

Losing my new greenhouse to strong winds and all the plants in it (tomatoes and peppers). Went out to work and had a greenhouse came home from work and the farmer behind my house now had my greenhouse by a wind transference process

    Pear trees just not fruiting.

Waiting for the oil tank to be moved to somewhere else as it is in the way.

    Plans for this year
Using the new vegetable bed I created last year.

Stripping more turf off to make a new vegetable bed.

Later on in the year taking cuttings from the box hedging to try and grow more.

Husband has promised to make me some cold frames and structure to net my broccoli, strawberries, cabbage etc. Very rural area = lots of birds.

    'Having a go' at coppicing.

I am quite new to gardening and I am making it up as I go along. Luckily I have green fingers so I haven't killed to many things yet (although I am instant death to houseplants!). I am sure I will have lots of questions and I am looking forward to reading posts on the site.

Hello Spider and welcome from Harrogate.

it sounds like you are well on the way already.

I make tempory cold frames, by just laying old bricks or breeze blocks on the ground and covering with an old glass window. The cost is almost nothing and you can make it as long as you like - currently mine is about 15 feet long. You can also make it as high as you want. I had some taller plants I wanted to overwinter this year so part of it is three feet high. And then in the spring I stack the breeze blocks in a pile and the space is available for something else.
