    Hello,

I am looking at Herbaceous Peonies but want to grow them in large pots, just wondering whether this is a do-able thing? I planted a tree Peony in the spring of this year in a pot and that seems to be doing OK - new shoots coming through at the crown as well as buds on the stems.

    Many thanks.

 Well yes you can, they are not the easiest plant to choose as they do require attention in pots.. Herbaceous Peonies have large roots so you will need a very big pot for a smallish plant.. You must have excellent drainage, but they are heavy feeders, so you have to be very careful of root rot.. Also you must not let them spend time below freezing.. Although they do need freezing temps to promote next flowering.. when in pots though do not let them freeze solid as you will get root rot then too.. So they would need to be protected if temps were to be below freezing for any length of time & never never let them freeze solid..Hope that helps you decide.. :sunny:

Well, it's certainly a thing to try, but I don't think you will get the Peony to flower to it's full potential. You also might find it will take a season or two to for it to bud and flower. Let us know how you get one if you do go ahead as I for one would be very interested.:D

Thanks for the replies. I intend to move from this property, therefore, do not want to plant things into the ground. I could wait but ...

I think I will have a go, so I will keep you posted! Do you think a pot that is 40+ cm diameter and 30+cm deep will be large enough?

Marley Farley, you comments concerning prolonged freezing temps and risk of killing the root, does the same risk apply to Tree Peonies?

      Thanks.
