I'm needing ideas if poss for 2ft ish barrier to run round my beds to stop the dogs going into them - i'd rather use a barrier than other methods - so any suggestions would greaty appreciated :)?

i had thought of making a mini post and rail fence and running chicken wire along it but it's not exactly a pretty option is it? :hehe:

(btw - cocker, springer and lab (and another lab soon!) dogs - so doesn't need to be terrierist-proof size )

The chicken wire option would work, but there is also rolls of green plastic mesh available that I use to stop the chickens getting into the borders. Once the plants at the front grow up and cover the barrier, it's not that noticeable but you're never going to get it to vanish completely.

    flower beds or vegetable beds.

Flower beds - grow more flowers and shrubs and stop worrying.

Otherwise post and rail or cheapest picket fencing you can get. Its got to look good otherwise its not worth the effort.

Veggie - lots of options but it could limit access which is needed more on veg beds rather than flower beds.

flower beds - but they are being redesigned anyway and moved slightly so although i'll have a few mature shrubs the rest will be newly planted...
veg plot looks fine as the post and rails and chicken wire we already have round it as its hidden round the side of the house - but not v pretty for the front garden....

prob is - although the dogs are walked twice a day (and not small walks - the are working dogs so are kept v fit ) they still poop in the flower beds:doh:and make tracks round them so nothing grows where they run - so "grow more flowers and shrubs and stop worrying" is not really an option i'm afraid

i've actually been thinking about the metal boarder fences you can get...
i've got a friendly smithy up the road and i'm sure he could fabricate some that are a bit higher than the average 18 inches.... maybe painted green and they'd blend in quite well? :cnfs: then as the shrubs etc grow up they'll cover them too...

Dogs can jump 2ft if they want to.

Plastic fences look naff, so does green plastic mesh and wooden fences need maintenance, (just my opinion).

Mahonia, or something similar, that's what you need. Looks good and ain't half prickly.

ours can easily jump gates but are working trained so wont jump anything unless told to - so 2ft would do us just fine :gnthb: alas i can't train them to not go in an area with no barrier though

i'll have a look at that Mahonia thanks
