I have some zonal pelargoniums that I was thinking of overwintering in a cold potting shed. What is the best way to do this, as info on the internet is a bit confusing ? The main question is it worth doing ? Will the plants have the same vigour next year ? Is it preferable to buy new plants next year - I only need about 10.

The Peralgonium will often survive the winter, but cuttings are easy to take.

We take what cuttings we need and bring them on over the winter in the Utility Room. About 5 can be grown in a 5 inch pot and potted on on early Spring.
The parent plant can take its chance in a cold frame, but the new cuttings are usually stronger.

    Good luck with them.

If it's too late to take cuttings it might be possible to take cuttings off the new shoots in Spring - if they survive.

I took some cuttings yesterday - they're in propagators on a sunny window sill. Last year I had bought zillions of pelargoniums as plug plants, but about 20 of them just sat there as 3 inch high tiny plants whilst their fellows gres and flowered. I overwintered them and this year they have been fantastic.

        Hi HarryS
If you have some nice cuttings take them now , nice gritty compost ,I usually take 5 per 4in pot keep moist, pop in a plastic bag but check every couple of days so as they don't get to wet ( I usually turn bag inside out every couple of days to get rid of excess moisture ) and with this weather should root 2/3 weeks . keep frost free overwinter with as much light as possible ,pot up in the spring and nip tips out to bush the plants out ..
The old plant can be trimmed back and keep almost dry in garage or shed ,pop a few sheets of newspaper or fleece over in bad weather and it may survive ?
