point taken ... I am new to gardening

but what I have found is that extreme temperatures between low and high is what kills the plants (here in the UK)

get some early morning frost .... then a few hrs later get a hot morning sun.... and zap .... your palm and japanese maple are toast

I have seen this happen in the past 3 winters

what I can confirm, is that I have a client in Glebe road cambridge that has a purple passion fruit vine growing on a wall next to her kitchen door

I have been working there for 3 years, and can confirm that it has not died, and has fruited every year I have worked there ... and I have eaten some of the fruit (every year)

cut a fruit in half ... take a pic and post it here and perhaps we will be able to identify it proper

looks like some type of passion fruit from the photos, but not the same as we had in south africa as those had round fruit

Interesting. I have had this evergreen for around 4/5 yeara now. I've grown it over a trellis in quite damp soil. It has sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. It really didn't do anything until this year where it has really grown rapidly, produced flowers and fruit. Is the stauntonia hexaphylla native to Japan?
If it is tender, after our last few harsh winters it certainly hasn't been phased.
        Thanks
        Kelly

This is interesting, I don't know this plant but looking at the links, reckon SS is spot on. I know you say the plant has only just got really established Kelly, but did it keep it's leaves even through the last two winters? It is a lovely looking climber and with fragrant flowers and edible fruits too!

Yes it did keep it's leaves. I nearly dug it out a year ago and replace it with a clematis, so glad I didn't now.
