Yep good old Ted Heath put it to the country in a referendum, I think the outcome was already agreed before we voted, but it showed some kind of democracy.
Meanwhile Ted went off and enjoyed his free handout and the country went down the pan.

It would be illegal but they could do it. It would have massive implications for many economies and trade relations the world over. They'd wipe their Euro debt down to staggeringly low levels and lots of investments in German holdings would go through the roof instantly. It couldn't be done overnight and would take maybe even a couple of years but they could do it and if they did you can practically guarantee France would be right behind them.

As I recall Ted Heath had already got us in the EEC and it was some 3 years later when we were given the chance to vote against it in the referendum.

Ted Heath gave away all our fishing rights so we could join the EEC. We have never had anything out of it, all we do is support French Farmers and let the Spanish come and pinch all our fish - a national disgrace

Sadly the media were much worse in those days with massive vested interests, and we were not told the full truth/cost to the UK of joining the EEC. So most people voted to stay in thinking it was the start of a golden age with cheap food guaranteed :rolleyespink:

I did not vote for it at the time, and no one I know did
The problem I have is not the trade, but the dictatorship from Brussels as to what we must and must not do ,in our own country and laws overriden

We alone seem to be the only ones who comply, though the only ones I know personally do not are Italy France and Spain
Italy still ride motor bikes and mostly scooters without a crash helmet and not only that but four on a bike, the rider, two side saddle and one straddleing the back wheel,
Spain, smoking, if you wish to smoke then do it bar restaurant, office who cares
France, motoring laws unto themselves, except for visitors from the UK

Immigrants, which is the only EU Country that accomodates them all with full social security benefits, never having put a penny in the pot

I had a "lady" at work from Somalia with eleven children, been in the country three months, and was ANGRY that we only gave her £35k lump sum and £538.33 a week benefit rent free home (3 UK people moved and their homes knocked into one to accomodate her and family) and no council tax
How could she take the children on the school run in the Range Rover, she needed more money for Taxi's
I suggested she sold the Range Rover and hired a mini bus (I got disciplined for that :-)
I had seen on the news Somalia and a well off family had an OXEN CART,complete with Mud hut
She claims as a single parent (higher rate of payment) but all the kids have the same surname and the MAN ranting off in the background was just a SOMALIAN comunity FRIEND

How much does a British pensioner get that has paid in the pot for fifty years ?

Sorry for the rant it just makes my blood boil, in the wrong job six months to go

I think the age of voting was dropped from 21 down to 18 at the time so i was able to vote for the first time:DEven though i am blonde and not really into politics i didn't think it was a good idea as we had managed to trade for many years without being part of the European family so wanted us to stay as we were.My friend and her hubby voted to go into the Common Market as I think it was called then but they seem to be the only ones so i blame them for the mess we are all in now:mad:

Was the idea of changing from £sd to decimal currency because it was costing to much money in metals to make the old money or was there a different agenda with it?We were taught the old money ways all through my school days and the old imperial measurements, only to have it all taken away three months before i left school so never had a chance to learn the new stuff.I am ok now the money side of it apart fromt the fact there is less of it to the pound etc,but have never got my head round metric measurements:rolleyespink:

Pre 1921 the coinage was Sterling Silver, after that I think it was 50% Silver up untill 1949.

Its worthless now, even the copper coinage has been replaced, leave a 1p or 2p outside & it will rust.

from what I have gathered, there are a few families and people that control the world economies and governments

presidents and prime ministers are merely puppets who obey their orders and promote their agendas

there are several 'tiers' of rank, some of the lower ones are known as the Bilderberg group and have regular meetings

then there are those slightly higher up who gather and meet yearly at Bohemia Grove

then there are the very influential who you seldom hear about in the news

so, it does not matter what we think or do, if those in (real) power decide we should break away from the EU, then we will

I think it made life much easier going decimal regarding currency.
Although probably not at the time.

In these days of calculators you would need a special one to work out money if we were still on £sd.
Likewise metric measurements, I tend to use both, but still "think" in feet and inches.

Pre 49 silver coinage is worth quite a bit today as silver has risen along with the price of Gold so weigh it in

The new1p and new2p originals were part bronze and now
worth double face value as scrap, the current new1p is worth just .02p Use a magnet to seperate your change if it does not stick you have doubled your money :-)

I had an aluminium calculator that had columns & a stylus for calculating pounds shillings and pence, if I was still on LSD, I don't think I would be able to operate it.

                  Metric versus Imperial
I was engaged in the building industry for many years and as a sole trader I had to prepare my own estimates for jobs. It was a damn site easier when we changed to metric.

                  EU
We have to be thankful for over 60 years of relative peace. If the EU breaks up, it would not surprise me if we were engaged in another war within 20 years.

I see that the judge has now given the go ahead for the evictions.
I also see that the Spanish authorities are saying that some Villas are illegal development. Touché

Pre-metrication calculations were awful, measuring in feet and inches, calculating total volumes in cubic feet then reducing to cubic yards and measuring steel reinforcement in imperial was even worse. Then some contractor's estimator would compound it be pricing everything in £sd to the nearest half pence! And this was all pre-electronic calculator days.

For years after metrication you would be working on some contracts in imperial and others in metric, and for ages many of the metric contracts could still be using imperial drawings involving use of conversion scale rules.

The Bilderberg group's influence is questionable at best and the Bohemian Grove meetings are just an excuse for the old boy network to get together for a treetreetreetree up, flout various laws and regress temporarily back to their college days. Judging by the amount and quality of alcohol imbibed at these meetings it's any wonder any decent decisions could be made.

                  Oh, wait...
