    Hi everyone

I'm looking for some help with a university project I am doing on gardening, and would really appreciate a few moments of your time.

I just need some help from anyone who's interested in gardening and 30 years to 45 years old and lives in a city /urban area.

I study at Sheffield Hallam University, and for my project I am designing a service where old, derelict/ abandoned buildings are made safe, and then used as frames where community gardens and allotments are created and, where many people can share that space. It's all about regeneration.

Do you think it's a good idea? Is the problem of having little green space in the city to garden something that affects you?

Also it would really help if you could let me know what engages you when you see advertising. Do you spend more time online? Or do you see most of advertising at bus stops, billboards etc....

Really appreciate you looking at this and hope I get some responses [IMG]

Hi Uni, and welcome to GC

You will find a wealth of gardening knowledge here from many enthusiastic gardeners with interests in all branches of horticulture, who are always willing to share their experience and expertise with members of the Forum.

Although not exactly the same as your project, you might find the following link of interest. Grown in Middlesbrough

That sounds excellent the idea. Very interesting concept!

I don't know even remotely enough to give anything constructive but as mentioned, there's a lot of people who give you good direction!

another good project would be to look for derilect gardens .... there are many properties that are rented out by landlords, and the occupants do not tend to the gardens at all

just walk down the road and you will find many unkept gardens

there are many people who are very keen gardeners who live in flats and dont' have the space to tend to gardens .... many of these people are lonely and elderly and would love to be oudoors doing something constructive

match the 2 together and you could kill 2 birds with one stone ... give the keen gardener the space and allow him/her to create a garden with no inteference and at their own cost

we see many people in rural villages queing up for allotment space and waiting in anticipation for land to grow things (mainly veg)

I truly believe that something like this will work well .... If I were a landlord, and someone offered this service, I'd even pay for it

find the properties ... speak to the landlords and advertise on gumtree or loot for free ... with a bit of clever markerting (approach some large newspapers to promote the idea) ... and you will make many people happy

You should also consider the problem of cleaning the site of any toxic contaminants that have leeched from Industrial processes involved with the building.
This is usually the killer for regeneration of Industrial Brownfield sites.

Council Planning should be able to give more information for your local area.

Hi! I do think this is a good idea, but thought also needs to be given to sustainability and keeping the area nice after the intial re-development. Unfortunately such areas tend to attract unwanted attention, particularly in urban areas where there are few places for young people with nothing better to do to hang out. Bit with the right approach, it could be very good for communities. Very 'Big Society'! Good luck!

Hello my lovely , wicked idea . U could be turning unwanted eyesores into something of benefit to all and sundry , those taking part and onlookers . I'm sorry to have to be negative but do look into the fun and good thing killers , health and safety before u get too involved tho . between them they kill many a brilliant project and many carnivals and events have gone by the wayside as victims to the financial burden they impose.
As I said ,sorry to be negative but it would be a shame for u to get so far with your project only to find that u r going to have to find thousands of pounds a year just to be allowed to go ahead .......god damn those safety elfs and those that claim when they 'trip on a curb' that make public liability insurance necessary and astronomical ! Once again , I'm sorry and I really hope that such a good scheme gets off the ground : )
