Having messed up my seed id I'm posting this new thread.

My brother has sent me some Iris seeds that I'm going to give a go. Can I start them off now, or would it be better to leave them until spring please? :)

    Hi Sheal,

spring is definitely the holy grail of sowing / planting times, so most things will do better then, but its good to experiment... so if you have plenty of seeds and somewhere warmish to germinate them then why not try a few...

i have limited space in my greenhouses in spring due to bedding so am experimenting myself this autumn.

however... it is late for autumn sowing now......

I grew Iris chrysographs from seed last autumn, and have grown other iris from seed before, they're one of those seeds that need a cold spell to get them going so have to keep taking them in and out of the fridge to germinate, real pain, but I've found that by sowing in autumn in an unheated greenhouse they germinate the following spring here's a picture of my iris chrysographs ready for planting out :happydance:

Look forward to seeing which ones they are Sheal :D
I had some self seed in the garden last year, never had that before, from this lovely siberian iris, must have been the cold that helped them germinate, I swapped this on a swapshop years ago its spread around and made a lovely clump, love it :wub2:

They're looking good Simbad. I think I'm getting hooked on irises. I planted my first one last year, a second which I bought while on holiday in June and now my brother has sent these seeds.

The two I already have are dwarf varieties, I belive the seeds are too, we'll have to wait and see. :)

Go on joolz68 one more look won't hurt :WINK1:, I've been buying just a few more:heehee:, so wish I could resist:help:, think the collections just gone up to 163 plus 20 unamed seedlings :rolleyespink:, there's a great daylily seed auction site if you'd like the address :heehee:
I'm a bit of an obsessive seed collector too, my box in the fridge is bursting open :heehee:,joined the RHS this year and they do seed distribution to their members for a small fee, list available from 1st November :yahoo: , I know I won't be able to resist them either.

There are soo many gorgeous ones Joolz and so many new ones being introduced all the time, think thats why I just want them all:D.
Some of the seeds on this site are a bit expensive but when you see them you'll know why :rolleyespink:, a lot aren't available in this country so a lot of growers find these seeds a great way to get their hands on some crosses of the newer cultivars, plants cost a fortune to import due to the phytosanitary costs, do check before bidding that the seller sends to the UK as some don't,they do take 2-3 years to flower from seed but are really easy to germinate, don't get stressed looking at these :heehee:

Thanks for the offer Joolz, but I'd best hold fire for the time being. Both my gardens are still being developed and below is the only bed I have at the moment. I have plants waiting to go in there but need to move some about first as I've planted some wrongly heighth and spread wise, particularly the sedum which has gone berserk this year. :)

I've just received poppy seeds from Clueless, have to make room for those too.:)
