I suffer with nasal infections, it is similar to sinusitis though not as common, but it is horrid!!! anyway 5 days on antibiotics and I'm sorted!! I have been getting this infection for about 5 years now, it only occurs approx. once a year so I can't complain. I didn't get it last year so I haven't needed the "anti's" since 2009. It came on again over the weekend, my usual Doc. was all booked up so I made an appointment with another Doc. She spent a long time reading my notes, then gave me a lecture about people taking too many antibiotics!!! - err, excuse me, "once a year???" and then she showed me that my usual Doc. had made a note to speak to me about - wait for it..............Antibiotic Abuse!!!!!!!! She printed out a prescription for some cream instead but she could see how stunned and upset I was and then tried to make it OK by saying "I'm sure that will be fine" I just said "No, it won't" - and left!!! My eyes were stinging with tears, I am still upset, who the hell can you trust if not your own Doctor!!!
No mention on my notes that I was widowed last year, of course that wouldn't affect your health would it?!?!?!?!?!?
Sorry guys, just had to tell someone.

Sorry to hear that Val, some Doctors can be quite insensitive.

I don't blame you Val. I'd be upset too!! The doc is the one doing the prescribing not you. I would think about finding a new surgery if it were me!!! Hugs to you!

What an awful experience Val. You should get sympathy not a lecture, I agree with catztail, lodge a complaint and get another doctor.

Oh, Val, my heart goes out to you .. xx

One thing I DO NOT miss about the UK is the absolutely treetreetreetree and useless medical system ... and before anyone gets on at me ... my NHS doctors were reported because of failing to find I had cancer in 1986 having tested me for 18 months till I went private.

Yet again, why do I not live there .... ?

I must also say they did nothing for me as far as sinus and allergy problem went which I developed in the 90s ... and I still suffer today but the medication is very cheap here even if you don't go with the equiivalent NHS doctor, ie, Actifed costs €1,44 for 20 tablets just over the counter but I don't know how that compares with the UK.

Val, you are in my thoughts. xx

They are so unsympathetic sometimes. I too suffer with bad sinuses, all they were interested in was how much I was drinking. I use a combination of anti hay fever sprays & cider vinegar inhalations.

Sorry to hear your problems Val.I suffered with bad sinus problems for many years.starting off with tablets like Sudafed, then antibotics by the bucket ful.}I too only suffered with it badly once each year}and i often had it so bad the pain affected my teeth and quiet often i felt that if I had a gun when the pain was so bad i could quiet cheerfully have blown my brains out:mad: so I do know how you feel and I think it is a disgrace that your Dr's think you are abusing taking antibiotics and hope you get the problem resolved soon...

I hate seeing a different GP to my usual one. They don't have the same understanding of history. I am so sorry you had a bad experience, make an appt with your normal GP and get the records straight. I get nasal infections and they give me a cream called naseptin. It works OK but it does look like I have been snorting something as white blobs appear in my nostrils! I also have vasomotor rhinitis caused by changes in temperature and stuff. It drives me mad but they tell me to just use nasal sprays.. My family call it The Snorts as I end up so nasally challenged.

Which reminds me that on top of eczema my youngest now has ringworm so time to break open the tube of fungicide! :o Kids....

      Hi Val

So sorry you've had a bad experience. At my surgery one rarely sees the same doctor twice and I have learnt to treat them very much in the same way as I treat rubbish call centres: if I get a bad operative I simply cut off communications and repeat the process until I'm lucky enough to get someone who might make a small amount of sense.

I think the key questions here, given that you're only using antibiotics occasionally, are (a) were the antibiotics helping to control the problem? And (b) will the cream you've now been given do the same job? If it's clear that you still require antibiotics then you need to go back and argue your case.

It sounds as if your surgery wouldn't win any prizes for diplomacy. My mum moved to a new doctor recently after enduring years of rudeness from her previous GP. She is now much, much happier. I think more of us should consider doing this if we're receiving rubbish service. Medicine is becoming less and less of a vocation and more and more of a marketplace. So we should all be ready to vote with our feet.

So sorry to hear this news Val. I can honestly say I know how you feel after suffering from acute sinusitis for about 10 weeks now.
I am on the mend, but its been a hard slog.
It hurts in so many ways.
First time for me and I understand it will not be the last.
A twice a day salt nasal rince seems to working well for at the moment.
The three weeks I spent on antibiotics seemed to do nothing.
Oh well.. To all those who suffer. I know the agonies you are going through and have gone through in the past.

I remember reading a thread a while back on another forum that discussed chronic sinusites (sp) and natural/alternative cures

many were claiming that they had good success using Australian tea tree oil that was diluted/inhaled through their noses

some said a better cure is from stuff called MMS (think it stands for miracle mineral supplement)

may be worthwhile researching further on google, .... if memory serves me right, one persion said she suffered for more than 10 years every winter, and had anti-biotics and steroids etc ....

MMS cured her within days, and she was actually able to smell again (she had lost all sense of smell)

Sorry to hear of your problems, Val. I hope things turn out better for you.

I agree with the others. Go back and see your regular doctor and tell him/her what was said to you. If that doesn't help, change surgery.

My surgery is quite good but I have more confidence in the practice nurse who is much more empathetic and practical and I get much more time with her. I just phone the surgery and ask for an appointment with her and they don't even ask what I want. If my problem is something that she is not qualified to deal with (almost never happens) then she books an appointment for me with the doctor she thinks is the best for that situation.
