Our road is about as urban as you can get. So imagine our surprise a few weeks back when we were woken by the unmistakable sound of a cockerel. Since then, he's been proudly doing his stuff at the crack of dawn each day without fail. Come to think of it, he's pretty noisy for the rest of the day as well. I love the sound he makes, which transports me instantly to the countryside. But the question is .... why is someone keeping a cockerel? Is this a case of a very caring owner who is particularly anxious to have happy hens ..... or is there some puzzled townie living down the road who is wondering why his hen makes such a funny noise and never lays any eggs? :heehee:

I've bought "Hens" that have turned out to be Cockerells Clare.

You can tell before they are fully grown, even when young they boss the Hens about.

Hens can occasionally have a sex-change (without surgery) and turn into roosters (google sex change hens). My sister in law had one of her hens turn into a 'cockeral' complete with large crown and spurs, then revert back again (some species of fish can change sex).

There was one around here for a few months.
I'm guessing he got the chop when they got hungry, as I've not heard him for a while.

I did wonder whether our fella was destined for the nearby Chinese takeaway. :heehee: I'm quite surprised that the foxes haven't done for him yet. We've got loads of them now. They sit on the fences, like cats.

More likely the foxes are destined for the Chinese throwaway.

He will be fattened up for Christmas I would guess.

:heehee: It's totally hypocritical of me, since I cook a chicken for lunch most Sundays, but I feel a bit sorry for him.

If we all had to kill our own meat.

There would be a lot more veggies:D

I used to think it was necessary to have a cockerel to keep the hens laying, but learnt on this forum it wasn't true. So I am mystified why people keep them. I don't mind the sound of them crowing though, and next door's is a real character.

I love to hear a cockerel, i don't mind them at all. :) One day, when i have the time, i'll get one of my own and some hens of course, but in the meantime, i'll just listen to my neighbours. I'd love a peacock as well, they're noisey, but i just love them too. Need a bit more space for those to meander.

I once had a hen that then turned into a cockerel.:heehee:
As to why keep a cockerel, They do keep the girls together, always watching out for predators and find food and then show the girls where it is.:) When they're free ranging it's quite useful and nice to watch too.

I took my Chicken round my Sisters' with a view to her Chicken sitting it for the week. She took one look at the Cockerell there & went straight over & decked it.

Her way of getting to come on holiday with me I suppose.
