apparently Edinburgh zoo will have an imported GIANT PANDA for a while. He eats giant quantities of bamboo shoots. The shoots will be imported from Amsterdam, shipped every 15 days to Harwich and then transported to Scotland.

    They will "only" cost £ 70,000 a year:thud:

Sounds like an expensive animal to look after.

        Pandas amuse me.

They are built to be able to eat virtually anything. They are capable predators of other animals, they can fish, and they can eat and digest a wide range of vegetation. They live in a jungle, where there is plenty of vegetation, and plenty of birds and smaller animals to munch. Yet they are in danger of becoming extinct. Why? Because they reject all the food on offer, and choose to limit themselves to one specific food source, and not just that, but they prefer it to be at one particular stage of growth.

But every animal has evolved a survival strategy. For some animals, they have evolved excellent predatory skills. Others have learnt to hide really really well. Some of learnt to built huge colonies for safety in numbers. Then there's the panda. It has evolved to look all cute and cuddly (despite being more than capable of ripping your limbs off on a whim) so that people send it money.

Don't they have any Botanical Gardens in Scotland? Not long ago I saw a prog., on TV where it mentioned that Kew (I think) supplies a lot of the bamboo required for the pandas in London zoo - either that, or they could try putting out an appeal to all those gardeners who (like me at one time) thought planting a bamboo was 'a good idea'.

There are 2 pandas coming, they are hoping they will breed here. Apparently a female panda is fertile for only 3 days out of the year!!!:OUCH: and to make matters worse the male panda is not very good at it!!!!!!!!!!!:heehee:

It isn't any wonder they're endangered. I can't help thinking they could try just a little harder. Would it really kill them to give baked beans on toast a try?
