I know a lot of people will over the moon with all this mild weather we're having and to a certain extent so I am as I've been able to get projects completed in the garden, BUT will we ever get any frost, I quite like getting up in the morning and seeing everything coated in frost, it makes for excellent photo opportunities etc

The weather guy on Autumnwatch last night was telling us all how much of mainland Europe (northern areas) is now 'freezing up', cold weather moving east from Russia, which in his words is 'frozen solid' and yet he proceeded to move over to the UK and guess what more southerly winds and mild temperatures forecast for the weekend and early next week.

I not having a moan lol :D and no doubt I'll regret this now as we'll probably get the worst winter for decades when it finally gets here lol :D :rolleyespink:

Right back in the garden today to make the most of this mild weather :D :D

Picked some summer fruting raspberries yesterday. Walked past honeysuckle in bloom on the way and there's even blossom coming back on the blackberries round here. But the entrances of shops are full of snow shovels, salt and de-icer.

Whatever happened to all the snow that the Daily Express has been forecasting since September this year?

20th September 2011 -Britain Faces Early Deep Freeze

2nd November 2011 - Big Siberian Freeze To Hit Britain

Perhaps it was more about selling newaspapers and tyres? (the weather 'forecaster' that the Express keeps quoting works for ATS and has only been doing it for a few years, and because there's been hard winters for the last two it 'explains' his 100% record in forecasting every winter is going to freezing cold with ice & snow).

Perhaps no-one has told the guy on Autumnwatch that the predominant winds over the UK are South Westerlies?

Sadly, global warming won't help the UK one iota, the Gulf Stream will be pushed even further south and we'll get a great deal colder very quickly.

Looking at weather maps I see that eastern Europe has been getting a cold northely flow recently.
This results in us getting a mild southerly flow around a large high pressure system, virtually stationary over Europe.

Seems to me last year at this time we were the ones on the Northern flow side of a similar system.
In our latitude it seems to be an up and down of warm air and cold polar air.
When you get a block on the jet stream we just hope we are on the warm side of it.

I don't ever remember it being this mild so late in the year. My bananas are still going bananas, pushing out new leaves. And my cannas have new flower spikes forming too.

Some Petunias and Geraniums in full flower around here, many Autumn migrant birds are hanging around as it's so mild, enjoy it while it lasts.:)

We had a very cold night a week or so ago. Spent half an hour scraping ice off the car before I could go to work.

Its only happened once so far this autumn/winter, and it can't have been too far below zero because it hasn't touched the nasturtiums, which typically do their boiled cabbage impression after the first proper freeze.

The strange thing to me is that on clear nights we should be getting large temperature drops, at this time of the year, but its not really happening.

I looked out at 10.30 the other night and it was 8C, then at 5.30 next morning it was still 8C, sky was crystal clear all night.

Last time I remember this kind of thing happening was around winter 1990, I think we hardly had a frost all winter that year.

Well, it's still fairly mild here in Cheshire considering the time of year. I've got roses still forming buds and flowers, Oriental Poppies doing the same, and some Exachorda actually bursting into flower.:D

The reason for the unusually mild weather is really quite simple.

Last year I failed to buy my lad a sledge, because I waited to see if it would snow, it did, and sledges sold out as fast as the shops got them in.

This year I've already bought him a sledge, a couple of weeks ago. His brand new sledge that he was so excited about is currently sitting unused in the utility room.

Had I not already bought him a sledge, we would be doing our Antarctica impression by now.
