Any tips on how I can improve my lawn please. its only small, laid on clay, and very uneven. I have heard you could even it up with sand and let the grass grow through ? could I seed on top (not on top of sand) to improve the lawn ? any advice would be great.

    many thanks

    you need to aerate first

use a garden fork and prick holes in the lawn 3-4 inches deep and wiggle the fork to open the holes up .... you need to do this at 6 inch intervals (laborius task but worth the effort)

then you need to scarify .... use a garden rake and rake the grass to remove the dead grass and thatch ... once you have done that, you can run the mower over to collect the removed thatch, but don't mow too short

I would not use any topsoil now, so wait till spring ... grass will not grow now and you will be left with a mud patch

    in spring:
add a thin layer of topsoil and try level off the site (but don't use a roller) ... you can buy topsoil in bulk (use google), and they deliver

you can also add some seed to the patchy areas .... water well and water frequent

once the grass is through the topsoil, add a fertilizer such as Scotts lawn builder

let the grass grow 3 inches tall, then mow the top inch (make sure that the mower blade is sharp)

In what way do you want to improve it, just even out the dips and the bumps?

A bit more info and a photo would be worth their weight in gold

          Dave,
This is a link to 'How To....' on here but some of it may be a bit out of date.

          http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/how/3862-how-post-pictures-forum.html

I do mine quite easily by using Photobucket - an image hosting site. I've put simple steps at the bottom of this post and a fuller explanation first :D.

First you need to go to their home page (can't give you the link as my computer takes me straight to my own album :rolleyespink:). Just Google it.

It's quite easy to set up an account with them - it's free - and then you will have your own album.

You can name your album if you like.

What I'm explaining is the easy way to do it. You can go into the other features at another time.

You then simply click on 'Upload' (it may take you to a second screen that also says 'Select Photos and Videos' so click on that as well).

It will take you to your computer and you can then scroll through to where you keep your photos.

Click on the photo that you want and click 'Open' (or you can double click on your photo). It will start uploading that photo.

When it has been uploaded it will give you another screen where you click on 'Save and continue to my album'.

Once on your album page just hover the cursor over the picture and a menu will drop down. Click on the fourth option 'IMG code' and it will say 'copied'.

Then just paste it into post here on GC. It will give you a correctly adjusted and nice size picture. :yay:

          Go to your Photobucket album.
          Click 'Upload'
          Click 'Select photos and videos'
At the new window that comes up go to the photo you want and double click
Click on 'Save and continue to my album'
Hover on the photo and click on 'IMG code'
          Paste it into your post.

I just did it with this photo and it took two minutes from start to finish.
