I'd be really gratefull for some advice please as i just can't make up my mind :rolleyespink:
I have a rose arch in the garden and over it is a very tired clematis(montana rubens) its quite old and looks rather sparse but she still does her best to put on a show...i'm not going to part with her untill i absolutley have to....i have bought an Albertine rambler and a star Jasmine and i can't decide whether to plant them both on the same side together or one at each side.I am visualising beautiful roses mingled with the lovely delicate flowers of the jasmine but don't know whether one would 'smother' the other one if planted together...can anyone decide for me please......

Lolimac - Jasmine is a thug!
Attached are photos of the arch that we made in Sues garden. It was ten years old in the photos.

I think that it is a worthy plant and deserves a place in the garden, but I don't think that it is a sharing plant as it is so vigorous!

Longk is right about Jasmine being a Thug, lolimac:D I use Jasmine as a hedge around one side on my pond and I cut it back hard every Spring but it just comes back thicker and taller, and I think you'd have a job trying to separate it from whatever rose you choose to be companion once they're established.:wallbang::D

My arched trellis entrance to the garden has eight Clematis on one side and five on the other and is easy to maintain. I also mix Sweetpeas and Nasturtiums every year into the Clematis and that gives me a longer flowering period. I did contemplate planting roses but didn't want anyone getting caught with thorns from wayward shoots so decided against it. Having said that I have just planted Rose Compassion and Alchemist on either side of my Arbor where I can sit with a glass or two and contemplate life!! I've also got 4 different Honeysuckle to plant as two on each side of the Arbor as well, so we'll see how that works out.:D

My experience with Jasmine as a hedge makes me think it's too aggressive for what you have in mind.:heehee::rolleyespink::D

Hi Louise, yes, I actually put the photo's on the Thread "Armandii's Retreat" but here they are again:

That's the Trellis Entrance from a distance

This is a pic of the side, albeit towards the start of the Autumn:

        An inside look:

The Arbor I only built this year out of scrap wood. It faces West so that I can sit and watch the Sun go down with a glass of wine! I've only just planted Roses Compassion and Alchemist on either side so it will be around two years for them to climb up on the roof. Compassion is planted to your right of the Arbor and Alchemist is planted on your left. As I've said, I've got four different kinds of Honeysuckle and will plant two either side of the Arbor over the weekend.

Despite there being different varieties of Clematis on the Trellis entrance I just cut them down in early Spring and they seem to thrive so long as I feed them regularly.

Glad you like it, Louise.:D I'm not sure what my style of gardening is:heehee::loll: I have basically filled the borders to capacity and then beyond. There are literally thousands of bulbs of different varieties that have been planted over the years, with herbaceous plants standing shoulder to shoulder on top of them. :what: The only bulbs that don't do well in my sandy soil are Daffodils which, for everyone else are the easiest:rolleyespink::D But it does give a long flowering period in the garden, particularly with the mild Autumn we've just had.:D I hope all this has helped lolimac make up her mind.

May I point out Star Jasmine is NOT a Jasmine. It is the common name of Trachelospermum jasminoides. It is a very beautiful climbing plant which would be overwhelmed by R, Albertine.:dbgrtmb::D:D:D
