    Hello.
I have a shrub with loads of 'white fluff' spreading up from the base and the lower branches seem to be dead. The fluff seems to have a squidgy inside.I have never seen this before and have sprayed it with an all purpose bug control but i am worried that it may spread.Hope someone can help.Thank you.

 Well it depends what your shrub is.. Can you post some photos..?

If it is Box it could be Box Blight..

Or it could be Woolly Aphid, are there ants around it too as they breed aphids on plants for the sugar... Not sure if the frost kills them..!

I'm tending to think at this time of the year its likely to be scale insects.

I've seen shrubs and small trees with these over winter, but never on any of my own plants, so have never made a definite ID.

If it's woolly aphid the old traditional way of dealing with it was to brush it off and then use a fairly stiff brush to brush Meths into the affected areas. Don't know whether it would work for the other problems.
