    Hello,

In my yard/patio area I have a corner formed by the backwall of my house and the fence of my neighbouring property. It is unsightly as the tarmac around the drain is quite deeply pot-holed and of course, there is the drain itself. In the long term I shall be resurfacing the yard area completely but in the interim does anyone have any good suggestions for either hiding or 'prettying up' this corner. I have thought of using pebbles / gravel to infill the pothole to make a more attractive surround to the drain on which i may place flower tubs etc..., however i'm unsure if this would cause any drainage problems..? Anyway, any suggestions and advice would be really, really appreciated!!

    Thank you

    Hi and welcome to GC,

If you were to choose to use large pebbles I can't see there being a huge issue, they are easy to clear away should you need access to the drain. Also a good plant for covering large, unsightly areas is the trailing nasturtium-dirt cheap, very, very easy to grow from seed ( Lidl are selling them at 29p a sachet at the moment) and drop dead gorgeous. You can collect the seeds from them at the end of the year, save them and use them again each year until you have worked out a more permanent solution-although there shouldn't really be any need to if you do this each year.

    Hope this helps:)

Hi Rodders1 and welcome! What about a Ligustrum Lucidum or Large Leaf Privet as it's more commonly known. It won't produce flowers, fruit or berries but it will remain evergreen all year and cover any unsightly areas.....

as its only going to be a temporay measure to tidy it until the resurfacing is done what about a few large stones and a log pile, perhaps with a tall planter on the drain cover with a tall plant in to detract from the fence behind- you could plant up a honeysuckle on a trellis that would grow up and then fall away from the trellis - very wispy and pretty.

when you re-do the area you can move it somewhere else

or- stones pebbles logs and a birdbath shallow and wide) - that would make a nice haven for birds and look more 'natural'

Thank you very much Loopy, love the idea of a birdbath. Really appreciate your reply.

Lollipop - I'll definitely be going for the large pebble approach, you've given me the confidence that it should ok (I won't hold it against you if I have a drain disaster!!). Advice re the plant is great because I'm not particularly clued-up on that sort of thing and what you describe is pretty much exactly what I'm after for another part of the garden, if not to solve my unsightly corner!!
