Things are getting a bit dire here.

Although i've got the promise of a job, thats not stopped the endless letters and phonecalls reminding me that the man wants the money right now:DOH:

Apart from eating fish and one road killed peasant, i've not eaten any other meat since 1984.

I'm seriously thinking about eating Squirells. I would hate to eat Stupid Pidgeons as they are so lovely.

Would Pike be a better option? and has anyone eaten one?

I caught several Pike in the 70's whilst in Rutalnd. Ziggy. I took one to the Queens Head Pub in Nassington where the Chef cooked it for me, he also told me what it would taste like..........bland and a bit like cotton wool.:what: He was right.:D

Never tried pike, but "bland and a bit like cotton wool" sounds like cod to me. So what follows is what I do with cod, as I guess it might work with pike too.

I'd just shove it in a fish pie, buried under mash. But, unlike the standard recipe (bland), I put the part cooked cod in the bottom of the pie dish, with a few frozen peas or any veg. A good squirt of tomato puree, some garlic, LOTS of chilli, and LOTS of strong flavoured herbs, I use sage or thyme for this. Then the mash goes on top then in the oven until its the right colour.

Or, I've been known to use cod in curry, along with some fruit. Apple works ok, but sweeter or sharper fruit (pineapple, sharon, plums) work better still.

In both cases, the cod only really provides texture and nutrients. No flavour. All the flavour comes from the herbs and spices and the tomato.

For a while now, at least a couple of years, I've been contemplating that one. It makes perfect sense to try them, and apparently they used to be regularly consumed by peasant folk here on this fair isle of ours. Its just the thought of it, which makes no sense at all.

If I was to pluck up the courage, I think I'd rinse them, and then lightly stir fry them with some garlic and herbs and spices, and some sliced peppers and onions.

I got my mate Paul to eat one once. He said it was a bit chewy but not unpleasant. It was still alive at the time though.

I've had quite a few pike curries when I coarse fished.. New fangled rules/laws about taking stuff to eat these days.
