Need to re-home my parrot!!

Well, 10 years ago I rescued an Orange Winged amazon parrot from my neighbours who had shut him in a little outside porch!! I keep him with my other birds in the back room which used to be a playroom, this is fine because when he gets noisy, and he does get very noisy, I can just close the door.
When I move I shall no longer have the facilities to keep him and I think in a small cottage the noise would be intolerable for my neighbours!! I have grown very fond of him and I feel guilty just typing this :(. I have found a parrot sanctuary online, but I just thought I would try here first in case anyone actually knows somebody who would have him.
I know he is quite elderly by the condition of his beak and he is not hand tame but very trusting when you put your arm in his cage to clean him out etc., Any help with this would be so appreciated.

Just a thought Val, but why not take him with you and just see how it goes. You never know, the noise might not be a problem for the neighbours. The walls might muffle enough of the sound, the neighbours might be a bit deaf, they might like animals. Worst case scenario, if after a couple of weeks of being in your new pad, it just isn't working out with your parrot, then you can seek to re-home him.

Next door to my mother-in-law, lives an African Grey. He's a jolly old soul, and quite noisy at times but most of the time you can't hear a peep out of him. When he does shout up a bit, you can certainly hear him alright, right through the walls, but it doesn't offend anyone. In fact he often causes great amusement, such as the time wife's dad came racing down the stairs in his dressing gown not long after getting in from night shift, to answer the phone. Only when he heard the phone ring again, while he had the receiver in his hand, did he realise it was next door's parrot doing his telephone impression.

 

Moving house will be stressful for him anyway and if it doesn't work out he would have to move again!!!
I won't have a back room anymore where I can close the door.
I used to have an African Grey parrot and believe me the noise they make is only about 50% of the noise an amazon parrot makes.
I don't think also that giving the neighbours something to complain about would be a very good start for me either!!

Not only have you considered the welfare of the parrot, but you have considered your new neighbours too. Very well done, and good luck with the move.

 

My mother bred parrakeets for many years. I would suggest you make contact with a local cage and aviary bird society, they will find someone to take him for you. It would be better for him/her to go to someone who specialises in these birds.

 

Hi there! May be a little late to reply! Recently moved to the area and have been desperate to rehome a parrot having sadly lost my cockatoo a couple of years ago. Originally worked as a vet nurse specialising in parrots so well used to the different potential personalities! Keep a large menagerie but would dearly love to add to our family!
